We’re still getting the TV adaptation, at least.
Following the devastating news of BioWare’s closure and the cancellation of the next Mass Effect game, many have been questioning the status of Amazon’s TV adaptation. However, IGN has reported that, at least on that front, things are still running smoothly.
According to the outlet, all the creatives attached to the project remain on board. Doug Jung, known for his work on Star Trek Beyond and Chief of War, remains the showrunner. Meanwhile, Daniel Casey, the writer behind Fast & Furious 9, will pen the series. The production team also includes Jessica Jones as an executive producer, alongside Karim Zreik, BioWare’s Mass Effect head, and Ari Arad, a former Marvel Studios producer.
Amazon Prime also has several other notable video game adaptations lined up, including God of War, Tomb Raider, Life Is Strange, and Warhammer 40,000. While these projects have already made progress towards production, with A-list casts attached, the Mass Effect series remains in the early stages of development.
Is the Mass Effect TV Show still in development?
The Mass Effect TV adaptation has been in the works for years, with attempts to bring the franchise to the big screen dating back to 2021. However, it was only officially announced as a TV series in development at Prime Video in 2024.
More than a year later, in April 2026, reports emerged that the script was being rewritten. Amazon’s head of global television, Peter Friedlander, reportedly wanted the series to be “more appealing to non-gamers”. This suggests that the show has yet to begin filming and remains in the early stages of development just seven months ago.
Now, with BioWare shutting down, and its next Mass Effect video game cancelled, it’s promising that the TV adaptation is still moving forward.
The Mass Effect series will be based on the original game franchise. However, it has been confirmed that the story will take place after the events of the original trilogy, rather than following Commander Shepard directly. This approach might be due to potential complications stemming from different choices players can make and its branching narratives.
There is no confirmed release window for the Mass Effect TV series yet. However, production was reportedly scheduled to begin in Q4 2026, which brings us to the present day.
