God of War TV series releases first look at Kratos and Atreus
Production on Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming live-action God of War TV series appears to be ramping up, as the series has spent the last few months solidifying its main cast. Just this week, Amazon released a first look at God of War's iconic protagonists Kratos and Atreus in costume, suggesting that filming has either begun, or will begin very soon.
The image harkens back to God of War (2018)’s opening hours, with Kratos teaching Atreus how to hunt. This takes place after the two lay Atreus’ mother to rest, and right before Kratos decides to go on a quest with Atreus to scatter her ashes. That quest turns out to be a whole lot more complicated than it first seems to be, however.
Public opinion on the series’ first look image appears to be split, with fans questioning the series’ choice of actors and costuming. One user noted that this didn’t make for the best first impression, saying “I love God of War and I am still very excited for the series, but you guys should have waited and released a better picture. It doesn't look good respectfully.” Another user cut right to the point and said “….im sorry it looks like dollar tree Kratos. Maybe it’ll look better in post.”
Ryan Hurst (who also played Thor in God of War: Ragnarok) will play Kratos, while Callum Vinson will play Atreus. The series also recently locked in Ed Skrein to play Baldur, along with Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, and Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as brothers Brok and Sindri.
Frederik E.O. Toye (Shogun) will direct the first two episodes, while Ronald D. Moore serves as showrunner. The series already has a two-season order, though it's unclear if these two seasons will be sufficient to adapt God of War’s entire Norse saga.
