Square Enix announces Final Fantasy Resonance, new HD-2D game based on Brave Exvius

Square Enix has officially announced a new HD-2D Final Fantasy game.

During this week’s Nintendo Direct, Square Enix announced Final Fantasy Resonance, a spin-off HD-2D game in the vein of titles like Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy. The upcoming game pulls from Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, a now-defunct mobile game, but otherwise functions as its own new thing.

Release date: 22 October, 2026

Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2

Developer: Square Enix

What is Final Fantasy Resonance?

Square Enix is adapting the first chapter of the mobile game Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius into a whole new video game. Though Final Fantasy Resonance is based on Brave Exvius, the developer affirms that “Far from just a direct port, it has been refined and extensively rebuilt as a full-fledged console-quality RPG experience.”

The game features HD-2D visuals and a return to turn-based combat, returning to the style of pre-Final Fantasy XI games, before the franchise pivoted to real-time combat systems of all flavours. The game will get rid of Brave Exvius’s gacha mechanics and offer a standalone RPG experience with all the traditional Final Fantasy elements, from airships to a story revolving around crystals.

Final Fantasy Resonance launches on 22 October, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Square Enix also announced Final Fantasy 7 Revelations earlier last week.
