IllFonic has removed a “controversial mini-game” in Halloween: The Game days before its full release.
Halloween: The Game, a horror title based on the 1978 Halloween film, has been embroiled in controversy just days before its global launch, with early access players discovering a “sex mini-game” involving Samuel Loomis and underage characters.
A gameplay clip showcasing the controversial interaction quickly sparked backlash, with some fans even reconsidering purchasing the game.
IllFonic has since responded by patching out the mini-game, although it was not specifically mentioned in the hotfix notes. The studio eventually acknowledged the controversial mini-game in a recent statement to IGN, describing it as a “major oversight” by the development team.
“Players may have noticed that our latest hotfix removed the Two-Person Power-Up minigame. This was due to an unintended issue that allowed end game reinforcement characters to engage with the minigame, which was a major oversight on our part.”

Halloween: The Game is one of the most anticipated horror games of the year, set to rally fans of the genre and followers of the iconic horror film it is based on. Players who received “Advance Access” through the Deluxe Edition were able to explore the game several days before its global release, which saw some stumble upon a “sex mini-game”.
The mini-game allowed players to enter a closet and have sexual intercourse with another character to get in-game buffs. Many saw it as an obvious nod to the “sex signals death” trope, in which intimate scenes are used as an omen of impending doom. It is a trope featured prominently across iconic horror films, including Halloween itself.
While the mechanic initially received little pushback, the situation changed after players discovered that the interaction could involve adult characters and underage characters.
A viral clip shared by livestreamer Monto showed the 56-year-old Loomis entering a closet for the minigame with 17-year-old Lynda. The game did not depict the act explicitly, but the interaction itself was enough to spark widespread criticism. Beyond Loomis, Reddit users also pointed out that adult police characters could similarly engage in the act with teenagers.
Just over a day after the controversy erupted, IllFonic removed the mini-game entirely. Some players have speculated that the developer may rework or adjust the mechanic before potentially bringing it back after launch.
The statement given to IGN also indicated that the developers are currently focusing on “immediate game needs” before turning their attention to additional content and mini-games.
“We have more content and minigames coming in the near future but current focus is our attention on immediate game needs. Keep an eye on our socials for updates as they become available.”
