Though his LoL esports career was brief, Shushei made history as one of the game's first World Champions and the inaugural Worlds MVP.
League of Legends (LoL) developer Riot Games has officially announced a unique tribute in honour of the game’s first-ever LoL World Championship MVP, the late Maciej “Shushei” Ratuszniak, who passed away last week at 36 due to cancer.
The official League of Legends Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) accounts posted about this on Tuesday (6 May):
“Together we remember Season 1 World Champion, MVP, and beloved player Maciej “Shushei” Ratuszniak,” the post read.
According to the post, players can unlock the “Shushei Forever” title for free to honour his legacy. They can also play three games as Gragas to unlock his Fnatic Gragas skin. The tribute coincided with the date of Shushei's funeral in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
Shushei made history at the first League of Legends World Championship
Shushei played a pivotal role in the Fnatic lineup that secured victory at the inaugural LoL World Championship, then known as the Riot Season 1 Championship, in 2011. He competed alongside Enrique “xPeke” Cedeño Martínez, Lauri “Cyanide” Happonen, Manuel “LaMiaZeaLoT” Mildenberger, Peter “Mellisan” Meisrimel, and substitute Bram “wewillfailer” de Winter, who stepped in early on when xPeke was delayed by a missed flight.
Beyond helping Fnatic lift the first-ever title in what would become one of the most prestigious tournaments in esports, Shushei earned the distinction of being the first LoL Worlds MVP thanks to his standout performances on Gragas. His accomplishments extended beyond Worlds; he also won Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) Season 6 in New York with Fnatic and IEM Hanover 2011 while playing for myRevenge.
In recognition of his Worlds success, Shushei was given the honour of selecting a champion to receive a commemorative skin. He naturally chose his iconic Gragas, resulting in the Fnatic Gragas skin.
Shushei was also among the first players to use Vi and AP Evelynn in competitive play. Earlier in his career, he was especially known for his AP Gragas and Alistar, and popularised the double AP meta.
One of his most memorable moments came after a win in the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) Warsaw qualifiers, when he celebrated with a chest bump that accidentally knocked teammate Hosan over. He was later inducted into Fnatic’s Hall of Fame.
