C9 Maelstrom and Tempo Storm advance to WCA Americas Finals

Cloud 9 Maelstrom and Tempo Storm advance through the WCA qualifiers and will face off at the LAN finals June 1st.

Both Maelstrom and Tempo Storm were the pre-tournament favorites so the end result is of little surprise. Maelstrom had no problems, winning both rounds without dropping a game.

There were two mild upsets in the first round. 2ARC gaming continued their personal domination against Cloud9 Vortex, winning their first round series 2-0 (they are now 3-0 in their last three series against Vortex). The more surprising upset, that was mentioned as a possiblity in our Power Rankings, was relatively new comers Zeveron defeating Complexity Gaming. Zeveron picked Brightwing all three games and they ran an interesting Kerrigan-Muradin-Jaina core for two of the games.

In Round 2 Zeveron continued the momentum, taking Game 1 off Tempo Storm. Perhaps previewing a change in the meta, #3 ranked Tempo Storm came back with an Anub'ark/ETC core in Games 2 & 3 to hold off the upset bid.

Overall there were not too many surprise hero picks, Kerrigan and Anub'ark saw some more play, and Diablo was noticeably absent with really only Stellar Lotus running him against Maelstrom. Oh, and Murky was picked in one game.

Congratulations to both teams. They will now face-off June 1st at the ESL studios in Burbank, CA. 1st pays out $10,000 and 2nd $5,000. Zeveron and 2ARC will receive $2,000 for third.
