The reigning MSI champions suffer an early exit as BLG settle the score and send them crashing out before the Knockout Stage.
The final round of the League of Legends World Championship 2026 Swiss Stage reached its conclusion with a clash between two of the tournament's biggest favourites, as reigning Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) champions
Hanwha Life Esports (HLE) faced off against reigning First Stand champions
Bilibili Gaming (BLG).
Both teams entered Worlds 2026 as the second seeds of the LCK and LPL, respectively, but found themselves in a do-or-die showdown in the final match of the Swiss Stage for the final spot in the Knockout Stage. In the end, it was BLG who emerged victorious, sweeping HLE, 2-0, to avenge their MSI finals defeat, secure the final Knockout Stage spot, and bring their opponents' Worlds 2026 campaign to an end.
The matchup also marked a rematch of the MSI 2026 Grand Final, where HLE defeated BLG 3-2 to claim the championship. Having entered Worlds as two of the strongest contenders for the Summoner's Cup, both teams instead found themselves fighting for survival in the final round of the Swiss Stage, with BLG ultimately getting their revenge on the international stage.
HLE started their Worlds campaign with a victory over LPL third seed
Top Esports (TES) in Round 1. However, the reigning MSI champions soon encountered difficulties, suffering a convincing defeat against LCK rivals
Gen.G in Round 2 before falling to
Shanghai Invictus Gaming (IG) in Round 3. With their tournament hopes hanging in the balance, HLE finally bounced back in Round 4, sweeping European champions
G2 Esports 2-0 to survive elimination and secure one last opportunity to qualify for the Knockout Stage.
Meanwhile, BLG had an equally difficult journey through the Swiss Stage, suffering an upset against
Movistar KOI (MKOI) in their opening match. The First Stand champions recovered by defeating
Team Liquid Alienware (TLAW) in Round 2 before taking down
Karmine Corp(KC) in Round 3 to bring their record to 2-1. However, their hopes of securing an early Knockout Stage berth were dashed when TES completed a reverse sweep against them in Round 4, forcing BLG into one final elimination match.
Here's how the matches went.
BLG edge out HLE in chaotic opening game
The opening game saw both teams trading blows from the beginning, with kills going back and forth across the map. BLG eventually managed to build a small gold lead after outplaying HLE in the bottom lane, giving knight more room to exert pressure. However, a messy team fight soon erupted around the mid lane and river, where BLG attempted to engage, only for HLE to turn the fight around and secure crucial kills to overturn their opponents' narrow advantage.
BLG continued to play aggressively, claiming a Dragon before attempting another engagement against HLE. However, their aggression once again proved costly, as HLE managed to come out on top. Both teams continued to make aggressive plays across the map, with neither side able to establish firm control of the game.
Another fight broke out around the Dragon, where Peng “XUN” Li-Xun managed to steal the objective for BLG, although HLE came away with two kills in the exchange. BLG later secured another Dragon after punishing HLE's attempted play in the jungle, with knight stepping up to help his team close the gold gap.
The back-and-forth continued as both teams searched for opportunities to take control. Despite BLG's repeated attempts to gain the upper hand, HLE managed to survive their engagements and prevent them from securing Dragon Soul. The LCK representatives also claimed the Baron, allowing them to push forward and break open BLG's base.
However, BLG were far from finished. After securing another Dragon, they managed to catch HLE in a crucial engagement, with Xun's kick and Zhuo “Knight” Ding 's Orianna Shockwave disrupting HLE's formation. This opened up an opportunity for BLG to turn the fight completely in their favour, cleaning up the entire HLE squad for an ace.
With HLE unable to recover from the fight, BLG pushed towards their opponents' base and destroyed the Nexus after 41 minutes, taking the opening game with a narrow 19-18 kill lead.
BLG dominate HLE in Game 2 to complete the sweep
BLG came out swinging in the second game, taking full advantage of their strong early-game composition to bully HLE in the top lane. The LPL representatives quickly established control, finding success in team fights as HLE struggled to weather the storm and prevent their opponents from extending their lead.
However, BLG gave them little room to recover, continuing to dominate engagements across the map. With knight on Locke and Chen “bin” Ze-Bin putting in tremendous work, BLG maintained relentless pressure, leaving HLE with few opportunities to fight back. Their dominance eventually allowed them to claim the Mountain Soul and build a comfortable 10,000 gold lead.
With HLE unable to find an answer to BLG's aggression, the First Stand champions pushed through their opponents' base and destroyed the Nexus after 32 minutes with a commanding 14-3 kill lead, completing the 2-0 sweep and securing the final Knockout Stage spot.
With their win, Bilibili Gaming have secured the final spot in the Worlds 2026 Knockout Stage, completing the lineup of eight teams advancing to the quarterfinals. Having lost to HLE in the MSI Grand Final earlier this year, BLG have now turned the tables on their LCK rivals, eliminating them from the biggest tournament of the year.
Meanwhile, Hanwha Life Esports bow out of Worlds 2026 in 9th–11th place, marking a historic early exit for the reigning MSI champions. For the first time in League of Legends esports history, an MSI-winning team have failed to qualify for the Worlds Knockout Stage in the same year, ending HLE's championship ambitions before the quarterfinals.
