A week ago this would’ve been more true, but in my opinion the most underrated hero is Zeratul. Recently in pro play, the time of Zeratul has begun; but in my own play it has always been the time of Zeratul. He doesn’t have a ‘bad’ build, his stealth puts the fear of the Void into the hearts of heroes, and his Heroic Ability wins games. Void Prison is the best ultimate in the game and it isn’t even close. How Zeratul is not constantly banned out or first picked is beyond me.
With pardon to my fellow writers, there is a clear answer to this. Almost every Specialist hero is underrated. Sylvanas is the only consistent pick; Lost Vikings, Abathur and Zagara are seen only in niche lineups. Of the forgotten bunch, Nazeebo is the most painful neglect. He has crowd control, can play in a push or teamfight lineup, and is one of a few heroes where there is actual thought in his ultimate selection. (They’re both so good) It’s a stale meta when few teams are willing to go beyond the same 15 heroes and experiment with different strategies. Hopefully the double ban draft will introduce a new World order.
The most underrated hero has to be Nova. A good Nova player can take out any target of his choice from the fight, before the fight has even began. Her sole presence in the game forces enemies to play passive or die. She brings a certain level of paranoia on maps like Blackhearts Bay and Tomb of the Spider Queen and with her Crippling Shot level 16 talent, is the answer to taking down any annoying tank.
I think the most underrated hero is Gazlowe, and I blame this on the perception that he is either carrying the game with huge wombos or being useless. A safe, conservative Gazlowe player that picks the necessary defensive talents and team fight talents (Deth Lazor talents and extra cooldown reduction on scrap for multiple lazor’s per fight) can safely dish out a lot of reliable damage and slow. Sky Temple, Dragonshire, and Tomb of the Spider Queen are all battlegrounds that Gazlowe excels and, while he doesn’t fit every team composition like a Valla or an Uther, he can more than pull his weight if play correctly.
When talking about underrated, the first thing people think of are the underpowered heroes. In my opinion, the real underrated comes from the heroes nobody talks about at all. There’s no better example of this than Azmodan. Azmodan is a siege master, and I don’t just mean pushing. He can easily deny turn-ins and capping from a safe distance and late game his globe can do as much damage as a Nova snipe. His laser of death is a great way to dissuade melee assassins from engaging you (especially those cocky Illidans). The only thing weighing him down is… himself really. He’s built like a truck, but with no escape and easily body blocked, he is very easy to lock down and punish.
