Malaysian-made Ondeh Ondeh Kaya's Tasty Tale confirms 2027 release in Nintendo Direct

Bandai Namco will publish game studio Metronomik’s next game.

Publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment turned heads at this week’s Nintendo Direct with a new trailer for Ondeh Ondeh Kaya’s Tasty Tale. The Malaysian-made game comes from No Straight Roads maker Metronomik, and was originally announced back in 2021 under the title Ondeh Ondeh.

This time around, it looks like the studio is doubling down on its cultural roots with this upcoming puzzle action-adventure game, which features plenty of Malaysian references such as a spin on the folk song Rasa Sayang and the classic “kuih” desserts.

What is Ondeh Ondeh Kaya’s Tasty Tale?

Bandai Namco Entertainment is officially publishing game studio Metronomik’s upcoming game Ondeh Ondeh Kaya’s Tasty Tale. The game will bring players into a fantastical journey set in a world inspired by Southeast Asian culture. Here’s Bandai Namco’s description of the game:

“In Ondeh Ondeh Kaya's Tasty Tale, players take on the role of Kaya and set off on a heartwarming, coming-of-age journey centred on family, courage, and self-discovery to become a Worldbuilder, just like her parents. To be certified, one must first pass a test: gather all the Giants across the world and perform the Renewal Ritual to rejuvenate the flavours of the world.

“Armed with her trusty Spoon and the unique powers of the Ondeh, players will help Kaya interact with her surroundings, solve clever puzzles, and overcome eccentric creatures that stand in her way.”

The game will involve rhythm-based gameplay, puzzle-solving, combat, and exploration. Players will have to follow the tempo in order to unlock new paths, empower the protagonist Kaya, and unlock new paths to take.

Notably, the game’s Nintendo Direct trailer featured the iconic folk song “Rasa Sayang”, a catchy tune many Malaysians would have grown up hearing on the radio or in shopping malls. The game also features references to kuih, a category of dessert found all over Southeast Asia including treats like ondeh ondeh and kuih lapis. The protagonist’s name, Kaya, is yet another reference to the coconut jam of the same name.

Ondeh Ondeh Kaya’s Tasty Tale launches sometime in 2027.
