Zach Cregger’s upcoming Resident Evil movie is almost here.
The upcoming live-action Resident Evil movie has officially locked in its runtime. This week, the film was listed on AMC Theatres’ website ahead of its September release. The listing confirmed that the movie would clock in at one hour and 35 minutes long, which is on the shorter end of director Zach Cregger’s filmography.
The movie will be shorter than Cregger’s Barbarian (one hour and 43 minutes) and Weapons (two hours and eight minutes). That seems to line up with its core premise, which revolves around a medical courier struggling to simply get from one end of Raccoon City to the other in the midst of a monstrous outbreak.

How long is the Resident Evil movie?
Director Zach Cregger (Weapons, Barbarian)’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Resident Evil has officially had its runtime confirmed, and it might be shorter than some might have expected. The movie is clocking in at 95 minutes long, which is typical of horror movies; though there are plenty of exceptions to the rule.
Cregger’s previous movie, Weapons, boasted a convoluted plot with an ensemble of characters whose storylines intersected throughout. Thus, the movie came in at over two hours of runtime. The plot of Resident Evil is a lot more streamlined by comparison, according to the director.
While speaking to PlayStation Blog, Cregger described the movie as being set during the timeline of Resident Evil 2, albeit with a different protagonist:
“So the world of [Resident Evil] 2 is kind of where this takes place, even though I’d make a couple of little shifts for dramatic license. It’s just following a different person who’s on a mission in this horrible night when things are going wrong in Raccoon City, and they’ve got to get something from point A to point B. And as they go, they encounter all of the same sorts of things you would encounter in the games.”
The protagonist in question is Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who finds himself in Raccoon City during the T-Virus outbreak. A few scenes from the above trailer give us a preview of his miserable trek through the city–from zombies throwing themselves off roofs and onto the streets below, to a monstrous encounter in the sewer. He’s going to have a hard time getting to point B.
The Resident Evil movie stars Austin Abrams as Bryan, Paul Walter Hauser as Carl, Zach Cherry as Dave, Kali Reis as Pauline, and Johnno Wilson as Max. The movie will hit theatres on 18 September, 2026.
Meanwhile, the next instalment in the Resident Evil game franchise is set to arrive next year: Resident Evil Veronica.
