Claire Redfield is making her grand return.
Capcom has officially shared more information on Resident Evil Veronica, the upcoming remake of its 2000 spin-off game, Resident Evil: Code Veronica. The game was first revealed during last week’s Summer Game Fest live kickoff, with a cinematic trailer that largely featured a first-person perspective.
While the trailer led many to speculate that the upcoming remake would only be playable in first-person, Capcom has cleared the air to confirm that it will be a third-person game in the vein of Resident Evil 2 (2019).

Is Resident Evil Veronica a first-person game?
For those worried about getting a little too close to the horrors of Resident Evil Veronica, fear not: Capcom has confirmed that Resident Evil Veronica will be a third-person game in the vein of recent remakes in the franchise, like Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4. This is in spite of the game’s reveal trailer featuring Claire from a first-person perspective.
The news comes out of a press event held during Summer Game Fest, which Polygon reported on. At the event, producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi noted that “It's going to be very much in line with the game feel of Resident Evil 2 remake. It's a third-person game.”
This isn’t new for the franchise, either. Resident Evil 3 opens with a first-person gameplay sequence featuring Jill Valentine, before it permanently moves to the third-person perspective for the rest of the game. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil Village, on the other hand, were released as first-person-only games.
When is Resident Evil Veronica set in the timeline?
Unlike Leon’s previous adventures in this franchise, we won’t see Claire Redfield have a big jump in experience for this game. Resident Evil Veronica is set a mere three months after the events of Resident Evil 2, which means that she has yet to join the counter-bioterrorism NGO TerraSave, and hasn’t encountered any other monstrous incidents in the wild just yet.
According to Polygon, Hirabayashi said: “The last time we played as Claire was in the Resident Evil 2 remake. In the timeline of the game, after the Raccoon City incident, Veronica takes place three months later. In a short span of three months, Claire isn't able to become an agent of the government or anything like that. The experience has changed her in some ways, and she has some training from her brother Chris."
Is Steve Burnside in Resident Evil Veronica?
Hirabayashi also dropped more details for the game, such as the fact that the word “Code” was dropped from “Code: Veronica” for this remake to keep consistency with recent one-word Resident Evil titles, like Village and Requiem. Veronica fits in nicely with that pattern.
He also didn’t confirm nor deny whether Steve Burnside, a pivotal character in the original game, would return in the remake, saying: “Let's say hypothetically that he is in the game. Like we do in every remake title, we're always looking for ways to dig deeper into characters to give them more dimension. That goes for Claire, and might include Steve. We'll have to wait and see.”
Resident Evil Veronica will launch sometime in 2027.
