The spell never resolved.
A legal challenge aimed at one of tabletop gaming’s biggest brands has been pulled back. Shareholders who filed a lawsuit against Hasbro over its handling of Magic: The Gathering have voluntarily dismissed the case. A notice of voluntary dismissal filed last week shows Joseph Crocono and Ultain McGlone dropping the suit without prejudice, meaning it could potentially be refiled in the future. No reason for the withdrawal was included in the notice.
Originally filed in January, the lawsuit accused Hasbro’s leadership of breaching fiduciary duties, committing gross mismanagement and violating the Exchange Act. Central to the complaint was the claim that executives were overprinting Magic sets, particularly premium Universes Beyond crossovers and Secret Lair drops, allegedly devaluing existing cards and harming long-term shareholder value.
The suit also alleged that management strategically leaned on crossover products when other parts of the business were underperforming. In addition, it referenced controversy around the expensive Magic 30th Anniversary Edition, citing testimony from former leadership that sales had been “paused” to create the appearance of scarcity. With the dismissal, those claims remain unresolved in court.
Hasbro earnings report shows Magic: The Gathering revenue is up 59% year-on-year
The development comes just weeks after Hasbro’s latest earnings call, where the company confirmed that Magic generated US$1.7 billion in revenue across FY2025, marking a 59% increase year-on-year.
That surge was driven largely by Universes Beyond collaborations, with Avatar: The Last Airbender becoming the third best-selling Magic set of all time, behind only Final Fantasy and The Lord of the Rings. Continued demand for Secret Lair drops and other licensed releases also contributed to the growth.
Notably, the financial report appeared to reflect momentum rather than decline, standing in contrast to the concerns outlined in the now-dismissed complaint. Hasbro has previously said that the allegations against its Magic strategy have “no merit”.
Looking ahead, Magic’s next Universes Beyond crossover will bring Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into the fold on 6 March, including a Commander deck release, as the trading card game continues to expand its licensed line-up.
