Sony’s newest publishing move brings Mike Booth back into the spotlight for a fully original, four-player co-op project.
PlayStation have confirmed a new partnership with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Games to publish an upcoming four-player co-op shooter directed by Mike Booth, the veteran designer behind Valve’s Left 4 Dead. The title will launch on both PlayStation 5 and PC and will be the studio’s first internally developed game.
In a statement published on Thursday (4 December), Sony described the project as still “unannounced,” with no gameplay details or setting revealed so far. What has been confirmed is that it’s a completely new IP, meaning players won’t be revisiting any existing PlayStation worlds or diving into adaptations of Bad Robot’s well-known screen franchises.
Sony and Bad Robot formalise first major game launch
In announcing the partnership, Bad Robot Games CEO Anna Sweet called the deal essential to realising the scale of the studio’s ambitions. “Partnering with Sony Interactive Entertainment allows us to bring our new IP to life, with an expansive vision for this new universe,” Sweet said. “With the support of PlayStation, we hope to deliver a bold, innovative experience that is truly special for players.
“I could not be more excited that Mike Booth is at the creative helm,” she continued, “crafting a cooperative adventure that will lead to unforgettable moments with friends.”
Bad Robot Games was unveiled back in 2018 with backing from Tencent, and Booth’s involvement in the studio’s debut title was confirmed in 2021. Since then, the team have largely operated under the radar, with today’s update marking their most significant step forward.
Christian Svensson, PlayStation’s VP and Head of 2P/3P Content Ventures & Strategic Initiatives, said Sony were keen to support the studio’s first major launch. “We’re greatly impressed with the talent Bad Robot Games has assembled at their studio, and are thrilled to partner with them to help produce and publish their upcoming game,” Svensson said. “Their unique creative voice and passion for innovating across all forms of interactive entertainment perfectly aligns with SIE’s mission to craft experiences that resonate deeply with players. We can’t wait for gamers to step into the world they’ve been building.”
With Booth leading development and Sony backing the project, players can expect more information once the studio is ready to pull back the curtain on its new universe.
