Helldivers 2 devs and Sony condemn death threats after D10 Dev Challenge charity event spirals

A charity challenge meant to test Helldivers 2 devs has turned into an ugly community dispute.

Explosions and heroic last stands are standard fare in Helldivers 2. This time, however, the fallout has spilled well beyond the battlefield.

Sony Interactive Entertainment and Arrowhead Game Studios addressed the controversy in a joint message posted on the Helldivers official Discord, confirming they are still “tracking the situation currently unfolding surrounding the Dev D10 challenge” that originated on Reddit.

The studios said the growing hostility within parts of the community made it necessary to step in publicly. In the statement, they stressed that harassment of any kind will not be tolerated across the game’s spaces.

“We do not tolerate threats of violence, harassment, or doxxing toward anyone: players, creators, developers, moderators, or our teams in any community spaces,” the message reads.

The developers also acknowledged that the r/Helldivers subreddit is independently run, but emphasised that it should remain a space where players can disagree without crossing the line. The community, they said, “should be a safe and welcoming place for all people to voice their opinions and frustrations in a productive and respectful way,” adding that the toxic behaviour seen during the incident is “unacceptable and not something we will ever condone.”

According to the statement, the situation is still being reviewed internally and with external partners. In the meantime, the studios urged players to keep discussions civil and to treat one another with respect.

“Humans are not the enemy, Helldivers,” the message concludes. “Your fight is elsewhere.”

The original organiser has since stepped away from the event entirely. In a follow-up post on Reddit, they explained the scale of the harassment they had been facing.

“I’ve received dozens upon dozens of messages like this since I first issued the challenge,” they wrote. “For my own well being I’ll be stepping off reddit and the community as a whole. Stop trying to contact me. The challenge is officially over on my part.”

According to additional comments, the harassment did not stop with them. Their wife was reportedly targeted, and even the animal sanctuary where they volunteer began receiving messages.

“I just learned they somehow got a hold of the horse sanctuary I volunteer at and they are sending messages there too. So yeah, this is it.”

The charity challenge that sparked the Helldivers 2 controversy

The incident traces back to a community post published on 28 February on the r/Helldivers subreddit. A player issued what they called the D10 Dev Challenge, inviting the developers of Helldivers 2 to prove their mettle under the game’s harshest conditions.

“D10” refers to Super Helldive, the title’s highest difficulty tier. The proposal was straightforward but brutal: four developers would need to record themselves completing an entire operation on the planet Oshaune at difficulty 10, clearing every objective across three missions tied to the active Major Order. If the team pulled it off, the organiser pledged to donate US$1,000 to a charity chosen by the studio.

What began as a simple community dare soon grew into something larger. Other players and creators began pledging additional funds, effectively transforming the challenge into an expanding charity drive. Even the studio itself appeared to embrace the idea. Shams Jorjani, CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios, shared images on the game’s Discord server showing developers, including himself, attempting runs at the daunting difficulty.

Exactly how the situation escalated from a charity stunt into harassment remains unclear. Some discussions on the r/HelldiversSodium subreddit point to friction with a group labelled “Glazedivers”, described by posters as fiercely protective of the studio. In those threads, the challenge was interpreted by some players as a slight against the developers’ skill.

Piecing together the timeline has been difficult. According to users, numerous posts discussing the controversy have been removed from the main subreddit, making it harder to verify the sequence of events.

Arrowhead says it is continuing to monitor and review the situation internally, and with external partners, while the fate of the D10 Dev Challenge remains uncertain.
