Warner Bros. Pictures confirms A Minecraft Movie sequel, sets 2027 release date

Grab your pickaxe! Minecraft is digging back into cinemas.

Warner Bros. Pictures has confirmed that a sequel to A Minecraft Movie is now in the works, with the upcoming film set to hit cinemas on 23 July, 2027. The news arrived with a new teaser poster, giving fans a first look at the next chapter in Mojang’s blocky cinematic universe.

The announcement follows the massive success of the first Minecraft movie, which became one of 2025’s biggest theatrical releases. Opening in April, the family-friendly adventure surprised Hollywood with a $162 million domestic debut and $312 million worldwide in its opening weekend. It went on to gross $957 million globally, making it the year’s second-highest-earning film, just behind Disney’s Lilo & Stitch remake.

Driven by younger audiences and a viral “Chicken Jockey” trend that spread across social media, A Minecraft Movie managed to capture the same creative energy that made its source material one of the most popular video games in the world.

What to expect from the Minecraft movie sequel

Warner Bros. hasn’t revealed any story details yet, nor confirmed which actors will return. The first film featured an ensemble cast including Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Danielle Brooks, and blended live-action with digital animation to bring the game’s signature world to life.

While the studio is keeping quiet about the sequel’s direction, its return to Minecraft’s cinematic world marks another major collaboration between Warner Bros. and Legendary, who produced the first film.

Minecraft continues to be one of the best-selling games of all time, with nearly 200 million active players every month. With that kind of global audience, the 2027 sequel already has a built-in fanbase, though it won’t be the only big-name return that summer. The Simpsons Movie sequel is set to release on the very same day, setting up a playful box office face-off between two cultural icons.
