The WePlay AniMajor group stage has come to an end after a long trail of draw scores, exciting comebacks and heart-breaking results for both South America and EU Dota.

After the top two places in the group were claimed by PSG.LGD and Team Nigma in dominating fashion, the rest of the battlefield became a fight for survival between Team Liquid, beastcoast and Team Spirit, who all struggled to land a 2-0 victory. In the end, beastcoast were the first to drop out and the final series of the group stage had implications for both Liquid and Team Spirit. The former needed a 2-0 victory in their final clash with Evil Geniuses in order to advance further, but they got decimated by Daryl Koh "iceiceice" Pei’s Broodmother in the first game and all they could do moving forward was to fight for yet another draw that would have forced a best-of-one tiebreaker with elimination on the line against Team Spirit.

Team Liquid vs Team Spirit

Liquid secured the tie with a Luna carry, Syed "SumaiL" Hassan’s staple Invoker and Aydin "iNSaNiA" Sarkohi’ Oracle, and were able to keep the exact same picks in the decider match with Team Spirit as well.

However, they played in a Tidehunter opener from their adversaries, a carry Draw Ranger and a support Shadow Demon that elevated Luna’s illusions created with the Disruption spell to almost match the original hero.

Team Liquid were also up against Alexander "TORONTOTOKYO" Khertek’s Puck and although Team Spirit were playing from behind for most of the game, the tankiness provided by Tidehunter, the team fight control from Puck and Shadow Demon and the right click damage from Draw were constant threats for the European team. Past the 30 minute mark, Team Spirit’s line-up started to show up and turned the tide with just two good team fights.

While Team Liquid will bow out of the tournament, Team Spirit will join the playoffs lower bracket rounds where they need to make a miraculous run up to the finals for a secured spot at The International 10.

WePlay AniMajor playoffs will kick of this coming Wednesday, June 9 with the first upper bracket series played as follows:

  • 11:00 CEST T1 vs Team Aster
  • 14:00 CEST Alliance vs PSG.LGD
  • 17:00 CEST Virtus.pro vs Team Nigma
  • 20:00 CEST Quincy Crew vs NoPing
