BOOM Esports ends its eight-year stint in competitive Dota 2.
Prominent Indonesian organisation
BOOM Esports has announced their heartbreaking departure from competitive Dota 2 after eight years in the scene. The team posted the announcement on 8 December across their social media:
“Today, we say farewell to our Dota 2 division. A journey filled with passion, challenges, and memories we will always carry with us.”
An end of an era
This marks the end of an era for BOOM Esports, largely known for their Dota 2 presence in Southeast Asia since 2017. Though they started out local, with Indonesian stars like Muhammad “InYourDream” Rizky and
Randy “Dreamocel” Sapoetra on the team, BOOM gradually expanded to include more talent from across the region.
In 2022, BOOM reached its peak form with spectacular international results, including winning both GAMERS GALAXY events in Dubai and Thailand, plus a Top 8 result at the PGL Arlington Major. BOOM also made it to their first The International (TI) that year, though it yielded a modest 9th–12th finish. Throughout the season, BOOM was widely considered the best Southeast Asian team in the world.
However, the organisation hasn't been able to replicate that level of success since. Despite continuous effort in recent years–with consistent roster shuffles and even a brief relocation to South America in 2024–BOOM failed to resurface to the densely competitive top scene.
A rough patch led to disbandment
In the last two seasons, BOOM picked up some of the most popular and accomplished regional talent to form a star-studded roster. They were able to qualify for some major tournaments and occasionally find decent placements–such as a Top 6 result at PGL Wallachia Season 1 in May 2024.
However, they lacked consistency and showed stagnant progress–a pattern visible in almost every Southeast Asian team in recent years. Things worsened as two months into the new season, BOOM were repeatedly outlasted by
Execration in regional qualifiers for major events. It was likely at this point that BOOM decided to opt out of the brutal competition.
With the disbandment of BOOM Esports’ Dota 2 team, their players are also released. Their final roster–Souliya “JaCkky” Khoomphetsavong,
Armel Paul “Armel” Tabios,
Anucha “Jabz” Jirawong, and
Jaunuel “Jaunuel” Arcilla–has been let go as free agents.
BOOM Esports is the latest organisation to exit the Dota 2 scene, following other major names such as
Shopify Rebellion,
Nouns Esports, and
Wildcard, which have also left the competitive sphere over the past two years.
BOOM Esports continues their journey in esports
In the announcement, BOOM stated: “This chapter closes, but our story in esports continues. Stay with us as we begin our next adventure.”
Though BOOM will be absent from competitive Dota 2, the organisation remains committed to other esports divisions. The Indonesian organisation has its footing in three other titles–Honor of Kings, PUBG Mobile, and VALORANT.
