In a six-game series against EG's Revival, Liquid's Protoss ace Hyeon Deok "HerO" Song showed why he was labeled tournament favorite and walked out $20,000 richer and WCS America champion.
The only player to not drop a single match during the group phase, Liquid`HerO entered the playoffs with quite the respectable résumé. Having the NASL 4 trophy on his account further made the Protoss ace a formidable opponent, having proved that he can win on American soil as easily as he can on European.
HerO's run through the first two playoff rounds included ousting Axiom team-mates Alicia and Ryung, scoring 3-1 and 3-2 against them respectively and thus entering the grand final face-off.
Against him stood Dong Hyun "Revival" Kim, an EG Zerg played and a Proleague team-mate to HerO himself. The two were paired together in Round of 16 Group C but never got to play each other so the WCS NA finals were thus thus the first televized match between them.
Having scored 3-1's against Liquid`Snute and his own team-mate Alive, the momentum was with Revival and he opened the series with back to back wins, becoming the first player to take the opening map away from HerO in this tournament.
Yet this momentum was quickly shut down. Spawning on Daybreak, HerO took his first win for the series, tied the score on Bel'Shir Vestige and recoded two more wins for the 2-4 comeback, handling Revival the silver medal and taking the trophy for himself.
HerO's victory in WCS America (as well as Alicia's triumph over Snute in same tournament's placement bracket) puts an end to the first third of regional competition and the sixteen best players advance to the seasonal finals in Korea June 7-9. The full line-up is listed below.
