After a cheese galore and a macro game finisher, Woongjin Stars' Min Chul "Soulkey" Kim is crowned the first Heart of the Swarm GSL champion after engineering an impossible comeback against the TvZ mastermind Innovation.
In the afternoon of June 1st, arguably the best TvZ player in the world went against Woongjin's ace and one trained inthe match-up by Flash himself. The stakes were highest as the first Heart of the Swarm GSL championship was on the line.
Having in mind Innovation's recent successes, the larger part of the community placed its odds there. The STX Terran had lost but a handful of TvZ games since the launch of HotS and as this particular series started, it looked like it'd be no exception.
A 12/12 proxy rax on Star Station, followed by an intense tug-of-war on Bel'Shir Vestige put Soulkey in a dire position. Down two games, the Zerg prepared a ling/baneling attack with a roach all-in follow-up but Innovation was once again unbreakable. Perfectly defending at home and counter-attacking with double medivac drops, Innovation pinned a 3-0 score.
Hanging by a thread one game away from elimination, Soulkey needed a miracle and so he recalled Symbol's sknow-how from the semi-finals. Two consecutive successful ling/baneling/roach all-ins closed the gap and a lucky scout on Innovation 12/12 proxy rax in game six tied the score. What started as a one-sided series for Innovation was now down to a seventh and final game.
Nothing went right for Innovation from minute one of the Daybreak set. His hellbat drops were shut down after doing virtually no damage and if that wasn't a big enough blow, an intercept on three full medivacs certainly put the Terran gainst the ropes. Capitalizing on this gift, Soulkey went on a puncturing offense. A baneling/roach attack blew up Innovation's third while a mutalisk flock raided his main, bringing Terran's economy to ruin. After a few baneling connects during the few direct engagements that there were, Soulkey accepted Innovation's final GG and walked out of the booth a champion and $20,000 richer.
