WCG05: Legionnaire 3rd

[s]event_10[/s]

Legionnaire went 7-0 through Group C, and ravaged on in the playoffs, by beating Advokate and LaMeR. In the semifinals he was defeated by Androide. Minutes ago, Legionnaire ended up third by beating CNSTORM, two games to one.

The first game was played on Estrella. Australia Legionnaire went fast corsairs to prevent China CNSTORM from getting out. He did it nicely and forced CNSTORM to go hydras. As a counter to this, Legionnaire went reavers and dominated the game by a stable macro but especially many harassing attacks, having CNSTORM running around constantly between his expansions to defend himself. It was a one-sided domination by Legionnaire.

Game two - Azalea

The second game was played on Azalea. CNSTORM took his two natural expansions while Legionnaire made a 2gate wallin outside of his two. Legionnaire defended his wallin with zealots between the gateways so that zerglings could not get in. CNSTORM was building up and soon had one full group of hydras outside of Legionnaire, who was running only on his main. However, his hidden card was a gateway up right where he built three zealots and ran into CNSTORM's main to harass some. CNSTORM did not send home his home army but decided to defend only with the few hydras he had in his main, so Legionnaire did a lot of damage with only those few units. CNSTORM's army outside of Legionnaire grew bigger and bigger and he eventually the two defending gateways where Legionnaire did not have a sufficient army and the three cannons did not do their job good enough. Zerlings and hydras was all over the place as Legionnaire had his first and last storm attempt for the game, which did some damage but couldn't help him to prevent a defeat.

Game three - Paranoid

Third game at Paranoid Androide was the closest match I have seen during the whole tournament. CNSTORM rushed and managed after a long time to get through Legionnaire's two zealots and probes in the ramp. Legionnaire was defending with 12 probes and one very damaged cannon, and was extremly close to lose. It continued for a long time as Legionnaire was slowly, slowly powering up while defending himself. He later on had two cannons up and running and added another gateway. What saved him was a corsair which he started building in the beginning - he had killed several overlords during the attack and CNSTORM had only a rush unit economy. Legionnaire realized his opponent did not have very much and powered up, got templars, speed, reavers and archons. After some pressure and some drops, similar to the first game, Legionnaire managed to finish the game up, receiving happy cheers and applause from mainly the Australian team.

Interview

Mazor: Congratulations to your third place! How does it feel?

Legionnaire: Bloody fantastic! I thought I played really well, everything was working well for me, I have never seen him play before so I didnt know what to expect. With my lack of practice I never expected to do so well in WCG, I was here just for the holiday. I will just keep smiling for the rest of the day now.

Mazor: Tell us about the third game versus CNSTORM.

Legionnaire: My game plan actually: corsair, mass reaver and then take the two gas expansions. Because you cant really macro really well since its a small well, I thought that was a good strategy for it. Of course, he was rushing and I went to send probes to block the ramp, stopped everything, zerglings got in, it was gg. I was really upset about that playing, because I did not want to lose by such a bad mistake. Then when I saw that he had no big economy, just like rushing units, I thoughts if I could get a DT out and defend my ramp, then everything would be fine. I probably took a lot longer to finish up than I needed, but I just did not want to throw the game away, so I was being very cautious.

Mazor: Please tell us something about the semi-finals.

Legionnaire: I wasnt playing so well, I was really upset with the first game when I lost my shuttle to his turret because I felt that at that point it was game over. He couldnt defend, he couldnt do anything to that, and that really changed the outcome of the game. That is one reason is why StarCraft is so good.

The second game I did a really weird build, hehe, which fortunately worked and I felt I was in control of the match. But, I made one of the cardinal sins of gaming, I didn't actually scout his main. Full props to him, he played very well and took advantage of my lack of, uhm, fluidity, I guess. Yeah.

Mazor: What did you think of this year's WCG, in terms of organization?

Legionnaire: I thought it was probably better than last year, there was no problems with the referees or the gaming. One big issue is internet at the players village, it totally sucked. On top of that, the food wasn't so good early on, because it was just McDonald's every meal, but that is also our fault as well, since we are too lazy to go elsewhere.

There is a problem in the main arena with the sound, because when matches are going the sponsor sound is coming over and interfearing. The number of spectators was awesome compared to last year. And last year the referees did not accept bribes, which was a bad point.

Mazor: :) The obvious one: What are you going to do with the money?

Legionnaire: No idea. Maybe buy a new motorbike, so I can crash and spend all the rest of the money on hospital bills.

Mazor: Congratulations again and thanks very much!

Legionnaire: Cheers! One thing I would like to say, I thought it was really good of the Chinese team leader when after the match, he started applauding and all of the crowd to applause for the fourth place finisher. He was a very aggressive good zerg, and I am sure he will do great in upcoming years.

Hopefully I will see you all in Italy 2006.
