18-year-old Jo Byung Se, more known as sKyHigh, was one of the three Korean CJ Entus players to take part in BlizzCon 2009. To the Fomos international writer Kerry "NeverGG" Collins, sKyHigh reveals how surprised he was entering the venue.
sKyHigh: Foreign fans focus on progamers' gameplay
- At first I was very surprised the foreign fans even recognized me and that there were so many people at Anaheim who support CJ Entus and StarCraft progaming in Korea, says sKyHigh.
He also compared the difference between the communities, saying that the foreign community's fans were mainly men and that they focused upon how him and the other progamers use their gameplay.
- Korean fans feel that looks and style are as important as game play, he added.
Jo Byung Se is known for his great mirror play having won nine out of ten lately. However, his performance at BlizzCon did not put him on the winner's stand, losing to Kim Myun "ZerO" Un in the first round. He then eliminated Chinese player Ji Wen "Beckham" Jun only to lose to Lee Yun "NaDa" Yeol in the losers semi final.
sAviOr: "Their presence helps motivate me to play the best games possible"
The BlizzCon 2008 champion, Mae Jae "sAviOr" Yoon, was unable to defend his title after losing to ZerO in the losers final. He did not feel BlizzCon had changed that much since last time, except for the increased number of fans. He says he feels at home at BlizzCon.
- Because I have played at Blizzcon many times now it feels like my 'home-town' and I now recognize some of the foreign fans. They are my overseas neighbors and their presence helps motivate me to play the best games possible, says sAviOr.
EffOrt: "I don't feel as though I am famous outside of Korea"
This year's winner, EffOrt, won all the pre-event predictions on who would win the event, and he he did not let his fans down - even though he did not know he had that many.
- As a new player I don't feel as though I am famous outside of Korea or that I am popular with the foreign community, said EffOrt.
- I don't feel any pressure, but their words will become my motivation to win, he added.
