The State of Korean Heroes: Power League Season 2 Edition

It’s been 3 months since MVP Black won the first season of Power League, and the first chance to see the strength of the Korean Heroes scene since the Summer Globals.  Will any team make a name for themselves here like Tempest did first in Super League and then in Sweden?

What is Power League?

Power League is a Korean community tournament, much like Heroes Rising was in North America.  Unlike other tournaments, the group stage is a round robin with group stage matches being Bo2 rather than Bo3, which means that draws are possible.  3 points are awarded for a match victory, 1 point is awarded for a match draw, and 0 points are awarded for a match loss.  The two teams with the most points in each group advance to the playoffs, which is exactly the same format as the playoff format in Super League: Double Elimination Bo5 matches with a Bo7 Grand Finals.

Where is MVP Black?

MVP Black announced in their massive community announcement that they won’t be participating due to their players being very tired and needing a break.  Here is the original Korean post.

What Happened to TNL?

In case you aren’t aware, the longest standing Korean team is no more.  TNL disbanded and its members went to two different teams: Crazymoving and Sniper moved over to MVP Miracle, which also has ttsst, Darvish and reset, while JaeHyun, sCsC and Noblesse moved over to Team L5, which also has NaCHoJin and Swoy.  These new teams are definitely the teams to watch in this upcoming Power League.

Group A

None of the elite Korean teams are in this group, so every team has a chance to win the group or at least finish in the Top 2.  So far LeaveKongAlone is this group’s leader after a 2-0 win over Team Y.

Group B

As the current World Champions, Tempest is the prohibitive favorite to win not only this group, but the entire tournament.  Earlier today, they played a highly anticipated match against MVP Miracle and destroyed them convincingly in two 12 minute maps.  The battle for 2nd place in this group is going to be fierce - former TNL teammates on MVP Miracle and Team L5 will face off against each other as they vie for that 2nd playoff spot. But don’t count out Now Reloaded - they managed to salvage a draw against Team L5 and if they win vs. MVP Miracle, they could shock everyone and grab that 2nd place in the groups.

Where You Can Watch

So far, no Korean team has decided to bust out their Medivh strats just yet.  Perhaps that will change in upcoming matches, which can be watched here in English or here in Korean, since the latest balance patch buffed Medivh.
