This list shouldn't be much of a surprise to anyone taking note of competitive HotS. All five are versatile heroes that fit in nearly any team composition, meaning you really can't go wrong by choosing any one of them. On the full list, Warriors take the #6 and #7 spot, which is likely due teams usually needing only 1 per team. Also, the Warrior flavor of the month seems to change more often than staple list of most Assassins. For instance, just recently Chen has been making a resurgence in the EU scene and was common throughout our very own Enter the Storm cup #1 qualifiers.
So what does this data tell us? For starters, lets llook at the similar traits the heroes share:
Sustained Ranged AoE Damage: Valla, Tychus, and Tassadar. (A honorable mention to Rehgar single target burst damage via Feral lunge + Blood for blood)
Burst Healing: Uther, Rehgar and, to a lesser extent, Tassadar Shields
Stuns and slows: (and interrupts): Uther, Rehgar, Valla, and, to a lesser extent, Tychus.
Vision: Tassadar and Rehgar (Far Sight)
Escape Options: Rehgar, Tassadar, Valla, and to a lesser extent, Tychus and Uther.
Are these traits the most important indicator of power level? It looks that way. It isn't hard to point out some of the most underplayed heroes and realize that they have none of these traits (or very clunky versions of them). The heavily nerfed Murky, Nova, and Thrall see virtually zero exposure in competitive environments and it's easy understand why.
What can you make from the data? Our Hero stat section is a cool tool that lets you easily digest the hundreds of tournament drafts that happen every day. Newly introduced heroes can sometimes skew the data (Lost Vikings currently has the highest win rate with three games played), but you can get an even more accurate picture by choosing specific time frames you wish to view the data from, as seen below.

You can also view individual major tournaments and compare periods side by side using the "Compare" button. These stats are constantly updated to offer a clear picture of what the current meta is. Your friends may not believe there was a time period when Arthas and Falstad were the most picked heroes in the game, but proof is just a click away.
