Hoej to play Faeli at Gfinity finals for his second LAN championship

The Dane is looking like the favorite to take the lion’s share of the $10,000 prize pool, being undefeated all weekend at Gfinity Summer II.

HouseCup #2 champion Frederik “Hoej” Nielsen came into the last Gfinity tournament of the year as one of the most known and accomplished players in the bunch, alongside Brit player Gareth “Cipher” Rouse. Experts’ predictions talked about a likely Hoej/Cipher grand final in London, but it so happened that Cipher – known for his silver medal at the $50,000 Vulcun Deckmasters – never made it out of the groups.

Cipher’s elimination was the first and only real shocker of Gfinity. The F2K heavy-hitter encountered strong opposition in underdogs Thomas “Weasel” Trancoso from France and Oldrich “Faeli” Mahdal of the Czech Republic. Following losses of 2-3 and 0-3 in the opening and losers match, respectively, Cipher was the first player ousted from the tournament.

Group B also had an unlikely winner as Pavel “Sychry” Sychrovsky took the top spot over DreamHack Valencia champion James “Greensheep” Luo. The Brit managed to recover nonetheless and followed Hoej, Sychry and Faeli into the playoffs.

Greensheep’s run was promptly ended, however, as Hoej showed top notch form on his Druid/Hybrid Hunter/Secretdin line-up and demolished the aggro Paladin of his opponent 3-0. In the other semi final, Faeli also had a rather convincing 3-1 victory over Sychry, winning the Czech face-off and moving on to meet the tournament favorite in the grand finals.

The winner of the grand finals – to be played shortly on stream here – will bank half of the $10,000 prize pool. Greensheep and Sychry have already pocketed $1,250 which means the runner-up will go home $2,500 richer.
