Biggest storylines to look forward to at ESL One Birmingham

ESL One Birmingham doesn’t quite carry the same unpredictability as PGL Wallachia Season 7, which featured jumbled rosters and last-minute stand-ins across various teams. However, this event will serve as a more accurate indicator of each team’s current level, with all teams competing at full strength in the biggest LAN tournament of the first quarter of 2026.

The results and evolving meta from this tournament will significantly shape the landscape during one of the most crucial periods in competitive Dota 2 later this year, leading into major events such as the Esports World Cup and The International.

Expect teams to go all out and bring their A-game to the table.

Team Yandex enters as the reigning champion

As is often the case, the winner of the previous event comes in as the top contender. Team Yandex put together an impressive run at PGL Wallachia Season 7, losing only a single series in the Group Stage before cruising through the Upper Bracket and defeating a formidable Team Liquid in the grand final.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that they did it with Dmitry “DM” Dorokhin standing in, the former offlaner for PARIVISION. This victory marks Yandex’s return to the top of the podium after a disappointing showing at DreamLeague Season 28, where they exited early in 11th–12th place. The Wallachia win also represents the team’s fifth podium finish this season.

Whether Yandex can maintain that consistency remains to be seen, but with Evgeniy “Noticed” Ignatenko back in the lineup, they will undoubtedly pose a serious threat to any team aiming for the title.

Teams are back in full force

ESL One Birmingham will feature teams at full strength, as several key players return to competition. Aurora Gaming, for instance, had been playing without their full core, with Rafli Fathur “Mikoto” Rahman absent due to visa processing and Egor “Nightfall” Grigorenko missing the previous event for similar reasons–both are now set to return.

Team Spirit’s reunion with Denis “Larl” Sigitov, along with the addition of new coach Milan “MiLAN” Kozomara, has already shown promising results in the previous event. With more time together–and the added boost of a LAN environment–the team is expected to develop even stronger synergy.

Team Liquid's absence clears the path for top teams

Team Liquid’s absence is a notable anomaly this year, stemming from their lackluster performance in the early-season qualifiers. But the team has shown significant improvement in recent events, now standing as our top-performing team, as reflected in our Dota 2 rankings

Their absence from ESL One Birmingham could have mixed effects. On one hand, the break may give them valuable time to rest and return even stronger. On the other, it could disrupt the momentum they’ve been building. Regardless, their absence will certainly be welcomed by other top contenders, as the path to the podium becomes just a bit less crowded.

Nigma Galaxy fields a new roster

Nigma Galaxy also enters the tournament with a revised lineup. Syed Sumail “SumaiL” Hassan is no longer in the mid lane, with Tony “No!ob” Assaf stepping into that role, while Cedric “Davai Lama” Deckmyn joins at the last minute to fill the offlane.

The team has faced a turbulent period: after an impressive Top 6 finish at TI 2025, the team failed to ride on the momentum and performances in subsequent events declined sharply. Expectations are modest, but Nigma has shown in the past that they can occasionally find their magic.

Can a LAN audience shift team dynamics?

For the first time this year, teams will compete in a Tier 1 event with a large live audience–albeit only during the final three days. This factor could have a significant impact on performance, as seen countless times in competitive history.

Veteran teams like Tundra Esports and Team Spirit may handle the pressure better, but underdogs like REKONIX and GamerLegion could also thrive off the crowd’s energy and rise to the occasion. It will be exciting to see how performances and results unfold at ESL One Birmingham.

ESL One Birmingham format

The ESL One Birmingham format unfolds over a compact eight-day schedule. From March 22–25, teams will compete in a round-robin Group Stage, divided into two groups of eight. Matches will be played in a best-of-two (BO2) format, with teams earning points to climb the standings.

The Group Stage seedings are already confirmed. Group A teams are Yandex, BetBoom, PARIVISION, Tundra, MOUZ, GamerLegion, Yakult Brothers, and REKONIX. Meanwhile, Group B hosts Spirit, XG, Falcons, VP, OG, Aurora, Nigma Galaxy, and paiN Gaming.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the Upper Bracket of the playoffs, while the third- and fourth-placed teams will move into the Lower Bracket. The bottom four teams in each group will be eliminated.

The Playoffs will take place from March 26–29, following the standard double-elimination format.
