Resident Evil franchise could conclude "in the next 10 years", executive producer says

We are halfway through the Resident Evil saga.

It might be a sensitive topic for Resident Evil fans, but the long-running franchise’s eventual conclusion is now in sight, with the saga potentially ending within the next 10 years.

According to executive producer Jun Takeuchi in an interview with Yahoo Japan, Capcom had crafted a 10-year plan which seemingly ended after the release of Resident Evil Requiem earlier this year. It is not the end yet, however, as Takeuchi reveals that another decade awaits before we reach the conclusion of the series.

When will the Resident Evil series end?

Executive producer Jun Takeuchi, said that Capcom began developing a 10-year branding concept during the development of Resident Evil 2 Remake, which launched in January 2019.

He suggested that the first 10-year plan has come to an end, but fortunately for fans, this marks only the halfway point of the franchise’s grand plan. Resident Evil has another decade ahead before reaching its definitive conclusion.

“The series' story wasn't planned out from the beginning; it expanded with each new game. When we were planning [Resident Evil 2 Remake] and creating a 10-year branding concept, this was the most challenging aspect. If you play through all of them, I think you'll realise the meaning behind the order of the remakes. With the release of Requiem this year, I feel like the first 10 years have come to a close, so I think the conclusion will come in the next 10 years.”

10 years is certainly a long wait, but Takeuchi also hinted that multiple titles would arrive before the saga reaches its conclusion, while keeping further details under wraps to avoid “spoiling the fun”. Capcom has already confirmed Resident Evil Code: Veronica for 2027, while a story expansion for Resident Evil Requiem remains in development.

"I can't say [how many new titles there will be in the next 10 years] because it would spoil the fun for everyone, but there won't be just one. There will be multiple titles."

Since its debut in 1996, Resident Evil has grown into a major force in the video game industry, with more than 30 games spanning mainline entries, spin-offs, remakes, and other releases. It remains one of Capcom’s best-selling franchises, with Resident Evil Requiem alone having sold close to nine million copies less than a year after launch. The franchise's lifetime sales has also crossed over 218 million, as per Capcom's recent report.

With another decade of releases potentially ahead, the franchise is far from its final chapter, though the countdown to its eventual conclusion has officially begun.
