After more than a decade, Battlefront is finally getting a new entry.
Electronic Arts (EA) has reportedly assigned DICE and Respawn Entertainment to work on a new entry in the highly-anticipated Star Wars: Battlefront franchise, according to Variety.
The news comes days after reports suggested that Disney was considering EA's DICE or Destiny developer Bungie to develop Battlefront 3. However, it appears that DICE, the natural choice given its work on the previous two games, will be involved alongside Respawn.
The report also comes amid major changes at EA, including BioWare's shutdown and the subsequent cancellation of its next Mass Effect game. EA has also outlined further commitments to Battlefield, Star Wars Jedi 3, EA Sports FC, a new The Sims experience and more, marking a significant development following its massive Saudi-led buyout.
Is Battlefront 3 in development?
Battlefront is one of the most recognisable Star Wars video game franchises, with the original game launching in 2004, followed by a sequel and several spin-offs in subsequent years. EA rebooted the series in 2015, followed by a sequel in 2017, with both games developed by DICE.
While the original games were well received, the modern Battlefront titles had their share of issues, most notably the monetisation controversy surrounding the 2017 instalment. These issues may have contributed to the delay in a potential third game, with EA leadership reportedly rejecting a proposed sequel due to licensing costs.
Nonetheless, fans have continued to vocally request for a third Battlefront game. After years of rumours and speculation that have kept hopes alive, it now appears that another entry in the franchise could finally be on the way.
According to the report, EA is working on a “new project” believed to be the third mainline Battlefront game, although no official title has been confirmed. The project is likely still in the early stages of development, meaning fans may have to wait several years before learning more about what it has in store.
Who is developing Battlefront 3?
According to the report, EA has assigned development duties for the new Battlefront project to its studios DICE and Respawn Entertainment.
DICE is an unsurprising choice, having developed both games in EA's rebooted Battlefront series. The studio is also best known for its work on the large-scale military shooter franchise Battlefield, whose sixth main instalment was released last year.
Respawn Entertainment is also a fitting choice, given its experience working on the Star Wars universe through Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019) and its 2023 sequel, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. The studio is also widely known for developing Apex Legends and Titanfall.
