One of Battlefield's most requested features is finally making a comeback, with new maps, vehicles, and a familiar multiplayer mode.
Battlefield 6 is finally bringing naval warfare back to the franchise, with players set to take the fight across the sea as part of Season 4. According to a press release published on the EA website, the long requested feature returns on 21 July alongside the game's biggest map yet, before the iconic Wake Island makes its comeback in August as part of a Top Gun crossover event.
The update introduces new vehicles, weapons, and multiplayer content, while also reviving one of Battlefield's most memorable large scale game modes with a modern twist.
Battlefield 6 naval warfare returns with Tsuru Reef
The first phase of Battlefield 6 Season 4 launches on 21 July, headlined by the return of naval warfare. Leading the update is Tsuru Reef, the largest Battlefield 6 map so far. The battlefield introduces large scale sea combat alongside two new boats and additional weapons, giving players more opportunities to wage war across both land and water. According to the devs, naval combat has been one of the community's most requested returning features since Battlefield 6 launched, making its arrival one of the biggest additions in the game's post launch roadmap.
Battlefield 6 Season 4 adds Wake Island and Top Gun crossover
The second phase of Season 4 arrives on 18 August and marks the return of Wake Island, one of the franchise's most iconic maps. The modernised version retains several classic elements, including its aircraft carrier spawn points and the signature beach assaults that made the original a fan favourite across multiple Battlefield games. The update also introduces a crossover with Top Gun, bringing a new two seat fighter jet inspired by the films.
What is Top Gun Carrier Strike mode in Battlefield 6?
Alongside Wake Island, Battlefield 6 is reviving Carrier Strike, a mode inspired by Battlefield 4's Carrier Assault, which itself built on the Titan mode from Battlefield 2142.
The objective sees two teams battling to destroy each other's aircraft carrier. Players capture objectives to launch missile strikes against the opposing carrier before eventually pushing towards a decisive assault. The devs said the mode has been reworked for Battlefield 6, although it has yet to reveal exactly how the gameplay has changed compared to previous versions.
What is Top Gun Fighter Sweep in Battlefield 6?
Another limited time mode, Top Gun Fighter Sweep, will also arrive during the crossover. The mode focuses entirely on aerial combat, featuring jet only battles on a modified version of Tsuru Reef. Players who prefer Portal will also be able to use the new jets on dedicated jet only servers.

The collaboration also features appearances from Top Gun: Maverick actors, with Miles Teller commenting on the partnership in the press release. "It's a huge honor to appear in a long-running franchise like Battlefield with its millions of fans, and talented people working on it," Teller said. He added: "With Top Gun, it's like two titans meeting."
