Is Haunted Chocolatier a farming sim like Stardew Valley?
Game developer Eric Barone, best known for being the creator and music composer for the beloved farming game Stardew Valley, is hard at work developing his next game: Haunted Chocolatier. Little is known about the upcoming game, besides the fact that it focuses on chocolate-making with a supernatural twist.
However, Barone spilled more details on the game in a GQ interview released this week. He said that the game features a more “metaphysical” locale, but is ultimately “still what I call a town game.” However, there’s a big difference between Stardew Valley and Haunted Chocolatier: “But it’s more of an action RPG–the main focus is more about adventuring, finding equipment and getting more powerful. There are monsters, there are boss fights. It's for the people in Stardew Valley that go into the mines. That's what I do, honestly.”
Stardew Valley players will likely be familiar with the mines; it’s where most players head to early on in order to grind for materials and upgrade their equipment. In the game, players typically have to balance between farming and fighting monsters in the mines, but it sounds like Haunted Chocolatier is leaning more towards the latter in its gameplay.
As for when players might be able to try the game, Barone notes that no one will be able to play it until it’s fully ready: “No one's playing the game until I'm ready to show it. If you have a turkey in the oven. You're not going to pull it out halfway and have the guests taste it, right? It needs to be done.”
In an earlier update on Haunted Chocolatier’s development, Barone noted that he would not “abandon” the game in favour of making more Stardew Valley updates. The latter game is also getting new content in the near future, with two new marriage candidates: Clint and Sandy.
