Players upgrading to The Witcher 3 Remastered can continue their existing adventures without starting over.
Looks like Witcher fans just keep on winning. CD Projekt RED has confirmed that existing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt save files will work with The Witcher 3 Remastered, meaning players will not have to leave their current adventures behind when moving over to the upgraded version. Unlocked achievements and trophies will carry over too.
The developer confirmed the news on X (formerly Twitter) on 1 September, clearing up one of the biggest questions players have had ahead of the remaster’s release.
Will The Witcher 3 saves carry over to Remastered?
“Good news: your current saves will work with the upgrade, so you can get back on the Path right where you left off. Your unlocked achievements and trophies will carry over too!” CD Projekt RED said. That means existing players will not need to start another playthrough when moving to the remastered version, and can instead continue from their current progress.
While the carry-over is good news for players who want to continue where they left off, some are hoping Remastered will still give them another reason to start fresh. MrPigdenLOBO asked, “So it won’t be a new achievement list to unlock? Probably won’t be jumping back in without the incentive of earning more achievements. I’d 1000/1000 the last 2 versions and was looking forward to doing so again.” Dare I ask for a separate trophy list? I wanna platinum it again,” AlmightyWesker said, while ChesronKocsis similarly replied, “Noooo, make a separate achievement list for the remaster. It incentivises us to replay the game again.”
The Witcher 3 Remastered launches on 29 September for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S as a free upgrade for existing owners on qualifying platforms. The remaster includes updates to visuals, combat, traversal, monster behaviour, Roach handling, the skill tree, photo mode, and more. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are also being made available at no additional cost to owners of the base game.
CD Projekt RED has also brought The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project creator HalkHogan onto the remaster, with the popular modder helping the studio rework the decade-old RPG.
More Witcher 3 content is coming after the remaster as well. Songs of the Past, a new expansion launching in 2027, will take Geralt to Dandelion’s homeland of Letten and introduce new enemies, abilities, a chain weapon, and additional romance content.
On top of that, CD Projekt RED is collaborating with Blizzard Entertainment, with The Witcher 3 Remastered and Songs of the Past set to launch on Battle.net, alongside a new crossover bringing Geralt-inspired content to Diablo IV.
