Nier: Automata is going to eat up some storage space now.
Square Enix has released a rather strange update for Nier: Automata, increasing the game’s file size up to 366GB on Steam. According to RPG Site, the game originally took up around 50GB of storage space prior to this recent update, which seemingly includes a bug that inflates the game’s file size by roughly 316GB.
The new update added support for three languages: Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Korean.
Why is Nier: Automata taking up 366GB of space of PC?
If your games are automatically updated on Steam and you have Nier: Automata installed, you might have just noticed that your storage space has taken a hit. That’s because Nier: Automata now takes 366GB of storage space to install on Steam, following a recent update that added support for three additional languages.
On Steam, the game’s store page only notes a 50GB requirement, but asks for more upon installation. The game is also getting an influx of negative Steam reviews following the update’s additional storage requirements. It’s worth noting that the issue will likely be rectified by Square Enix soon, however.
Some have noted that the issue lies with the game now asking players to install what appears to be the entire base game with each DLC separately, thus artificially inflating its storage requirements:
The official Japanese Nier social media account on Twitter/X has acknowledged the error, stating (via machine translation):
"We have confirmed an issue where, after applying the latest update to the Steam version of "NieR:Automata," an excessive storage capacity requirement is displayed during installation. We are currently investigating the cause and working on a resolution. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. As a temporary workaround, you can download the main game by unchecking the DLC from Steam's "Properties" → “DLC.”"
If you’re willing to forgo the DLC, you’ll be able to lessen the game’s storage space requirements until the issue is resolved.
