Capcom announces Onimusha Way of the Sword will now launch weeks earlier in September

Musashi will be brandishing his sword earlier than expected.

Capcom has brought forward the release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, with the long-awaited revival of the classic action series now set to launch on 4 September, instead of its previously announced 26 September release date.

The surprise announcement came via the game's official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday (2 July), alongside a new trailer lasting more than two minutes.

"Onimusha: Way of the Sword is now launching on September 4, 2026. Experience the beginning of Musashi's journey with the demo and pre-order for bonus items when the full game arrives," the announcement read.

In a follow-up post, the team added: "We are delighted to bring Onimusha: Way of the Sword to you earlier on September 4, 2026."

The studio also confirmed that the original pre-order bonus will instead become an early adopter bonus, available until 24 September at 11:59pm local time on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows and Nintendo Switch 2, and until 25 September at 4:59pm PT on Steam and the Epic Games Store.

The developers also addressed feedback surrounding the recently released demo, saying: "The demo will receive an update in the future to address this, but will not contain new content. Players who have save data from the demo will still receive the bonus in the full game."

Why did Onimusha: Way of the Sword move its release date?

The release date change also reshuffles Onimusha's place in one of 2026's busiest launch periods. Onimusha: Way of the Sword was first revealed in 2024 before returning with another trailer during Tokyo Game Show 2025. During the June 2026 PlayStation State of Play, Capcom announced that the game would launch on 26 September, placing it alongside a packed slate of major releases before unexpectedly moving it forward to 4 September this week.

In the same week Onimusha was originally scheduled to go on sale, Dune: Awakening for consoles, Control Resonant, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age–Definitive Edition, Hot Wheels Infinite Rush, and Silent Hill Townfall were also scheduled to launch.

Other games due to release within 10 days of Onimusha include Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, RuneScape: Dragonwilds, Marvel's Wolverine, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Ikaruga, and Minecraft Dungeons 2.

Capcom confident Onimusha can stand out despite September competition

Speaking to Video Game Chronicle before the release date was moved, producer Akihito Kadowaki said the team had been surprised by just how crowded September had become.

"We were pretty surprised," Kadowaki said. "We probably expected a lot of titles would be in that window, but we were still surprised to see just how many games were there."

Despite that, he said the team remained confident that Onimusha could carve out its own place among the packed release schedule. "We think our lead character, Musashi, is a key selling point, alongside the satisfaction of the combat itself. The Issen mechanic, the parries, and all of those things come together to make a really unique, fresh experience, so we're not worried."

Only a few days after that interview was published, Capcom announced that Onimusha: Way of the Sword would instead launch on 4 September.

What do players get from the Onimusha: Way of the Sword demo?

A demo for Onimusha: Way of the Sword is available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through both Steam and the Epic Games Store. Anyone who keeps their demo save data and later purchases the full game will receive the Kubi Akari charm as a bonus. The demo is also set to receive an update in the future, although Capcom has confirmed that it will focus on addressing issues rather than adding new content.

Will Onimusha Way of the Sword have a physical disc?

Following Playstation's announcement about removing physical discs just hours prior to Capcom's announcement, fans were worried about Onimusha: Way of the Sword's physical availability. One such fan asked about this on X, to which the devs have confirmed that the game will indeed have a physical disc.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword will launch on 4 September, 2026.
