The fight for true strength sharpens as Musashi faces foes both human and supernatural.
A new trailer for Onimusha: Way of the Sword just dropped at the Tokyo Game Show 2025 during the Capcom Online Special Program. The long-dormant franchise is back on centre stage, with Capcom pushing its mix of swordplay, demons, and dramatic rivalries into a new era.
Swordplay meets the Oni Gauntlet
The footage opens with Musashi questioning if he’s dead before the Oni Gauntlet pulls him back. From there, it leaps into fierce clashes against waves of Genma, with fast, stylish swordplay on display. But his blade isn’t the only focus: the Oni Gauntlet takes centre stage as Musashi learns to wield its demonic power while wrestling with what it means for his strength and identity as he faces his foes and his rival, Ganryu.
Alongside the action, the trailer introduces several new allies who will join Musashi on his journey. These characters aren’t just companions in battle but play a key role in guiding him towards understanding the true meaning of strength. Together, they face supernatural threats that force Musashi to accept the gauntlet’s power, even as it challenges his dedication to the sword.
Ganryu’s role teased in Onimusha: Way of the Sword trailer
Musashi isn’t the only one bound to the gauntlet’s influence. His long-time rival Ganryu also takes the stage, with the trailer closing on a creepy transformation that twists him slowly into something monstrous. The setup hints at a clash that will go beyond their blades, with the gauntlet’s corruption adding new weight to their rivalry.
The Onimusha franchise first made waves in the early 2000s, with four mainline titles and several spin-offs released between 2001 and 2006. After years of silence, Capcom brought the series back into the spotlight with the remaster of Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny earlier this year, reigniting interest among long-time fans and newcomers alike. Now, Way of the Sword is positioned as the franchise’s full return, marking its first major new entry in two decades.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to launch in 2026 for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
But Tokyo Game Show attendees can try out a playable demo on the show floor, while a special stage event will deliver more details and live gameplay throughout the week.
