When is Onimusha: Way of the Sword releasing?
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to launch on PlayStation 5 on 25 September 2026. The game follows Miyamoto Musashi after he acquires the power of the Oni and finds himself confronting the monstrous Genma that have overrun Kyoto during the early Edo period.
The latest trailer focuses on Mount Oe, a location in Kyoto described as "a famous site in Kyoto where vast natural landscapes intertwine with history and legend." According to the announcement, the area has fallen under the control of a powerful Genma.
Who is Shuten Doji in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
One of the central figures featured in the trailer is Shuten Doji, described as “a colossal Genma who takes Mount Oe as his stronghold.” In the PlayStation blog, it was mentioned that the creature "claims to be Shuten Doji, the Oni of legend, but are his words to be believed?" The trailer seemed to showcase how formidable this new enemy was, with a huge build, a twisted face, long and tangled red locks, and a few horns.Musashi struggled throughout the fight, so this could mean that Shuten Doji would be an encounter players would need to brace for in the future.
New combat details for Onimusha: Way of the Sword revealed
More details on the gameplay and combat for the game were also published on the PlayStation blog, which provided closer look at several combat abilities available to Musashi. The game features a variety of sword-fighting techniques, including what felt like realistic strike impacts, blade clashes, parries, deflections, and the return of the Issen critical attack. Players will also be able to use powers granted by the Oni throughout combat and exploration. Among the abilities highlighted were:
Reflex Combo
In this combo, continuously evading incoming attacks fills the Reflex Dodge gauge. Once the gauge is full, players can unleash a powerful Reflex Combo.
Oni Strength
This was described as "Oni power that breaks through any stalemate with brute force." This ability can be used to shatter enemy defences with powerful attacks while also assisting during exploration.
Oni Agility
Described as “Oni power that clears a path with explosive speed,” the ability allows Musashi to perform actions such as running across specific walls to reach new areas.
What is included in the Onimusha: Way of the Sword demo?
The newly released demo is available now on PlayStation 5 and contains roughly 30 minutes of the opening portion of the story. Players can test mechanics including Parry, Deflect, Issen, Oni Armament, and soul absorption while progressing through the Kiyomizu-dera Temple stage. The demo also features a battle against Musashi's rival, Sasaki Ganryu. Unfortunately, players would have to note that progress made in the demo won't carry over to the full version.
However, players who keep save data from the demo can unlock the Charm: Kubi Akari in the full game, which provides a beneficial effect for Musashi.
