Life is Strange studio DON'T NOD faces uncertain future, Tencent reportedly ends financial support

The studio behind Life is Strange is weighing its next steps following a difficult financial year.

The future of Life is Strange developer DON'T NOD has been thrown into doubt, after the developer reportedly revealed its worsening financial situation, and disclosed that Tencent is no longer providing additional financial support. The studio reported in their latest 2025 full results that approximately US$17.6 million (€15.4 million) in cash reserves remained at the end of 2025, although a separate report noted that available cash had fallen to approximately US$10 million (€8.8 million) by 7 April, 2026.

According to a report by French outlet Gamekult, DON'T NOD also said its largest shareholder had not responded favourably to requests for additional capital or funding for games currently in development. The company is expected to unveil a detailed recovery plan on 17 June, as it searches for a way forward.

DON'T NOD's financial situation explained

DON'T NOD's latest financial disclosures paint a concerning picture for the studio behind Life is Strange, Vampyr, and Lost Records: Bloom & Rage.

The company reported a net loss of approximately US$40.7 million in 2025, alongside negative free cash flow of roughly US$18.1 million. In response, management is exploring measures to improve its financial position, including outsourcing work and potentially delaying its next internally developed project, known as P14.

Why did Tencent stop supporting DON'T NOD?

Tencent invested approximately US$39.9 million in the studio in February 2023, but DON'T NOD has since disclosed that its largest shareholder has not responded favourably to requests for additional capital or financing for games currently in development.

What contributed to DON'T NOD's financial crisis?

Reports examining DON'T NOD's financial situation have also pointed to Aphelion, the studio's sci-fi action-adventure title released in April 2026. The game reportedly cost approximately US$9.7 million to develop. According to SteamDB, Aphelion reached a peak of around 219 concurrent players on Steam following its launch. The publication described the game's reviews as positive, but noted that its sales performance fell short of expectations.

The report also pointed to Jusant and Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden as recent DON'T NOD releases that reportedly underperformed commercially, despite receiving critical praise. DON'T NOD has not publicly attributed its financial difficulties to any single title.

What options does DON'T NOD have left?

DON'T NOD has reportedly stated that it will provide a detailed outline of its recovery strategy on 17 June. Potential options reportedly include a sale, a merger, securing fresh investment, or shifting towards work-for-hire development.
