Capcom is giving Mega Man fans plenty to experiment with when the Blue Bomber and his brother finally return next year.
Capcom has gone deeper into what players can expect from Mega Man: Dual Override, with Director Shinya Ikuta and Producer Hiroyuki Minamitani breaking down its two playable heroes, progression systems, and some of the new mechanics during the Capcom Spotlight Tokyo Games Show (TGS) 2026 livestream on Wednesday (16 September).
Proto Man and Robot Master Twinkle Girl were first shown during Gamescom, but the Spotlight offered a much closer look at how the game is being built around Mega Man and Proto Man rather than simply giving players another character to choose from.
The "Dual" in Mega Man: Dual Override directly refers to its two playable heroes, and Capcom says each will have their own strengths, progression, and combat style.

Mega Man and Proto Man gameplay in Mega Man: Dual Override
Mega Man will retain a more balanced approach, with tools suited to both close-range and long-range combat. Proto Man, meanwhile, will hit harder and specialise more heavily in fighting enemies up close. That distinction is meant to give players a noticeably different way to approach the same stages depending on which character they choose.
"Each character offers unique gameplay and combat styles, providing distinct experiences," the developers explained during the presentation. Their differences extend beyond their basic attacks as well. Mega Man and Proto Man will not necessarily grow stronger in the same way as players work through the game's Robot Masters.
Mega Man: Dual Override stages will have three areas
Capcom is also changing how stages are structured. Previous Mega Man games traditionally featured eight main stages, each culminating in a boss fight. In Mega Man: Dual Override, stages will instead contain three separate areas, allowing the developers to stretch out progression and build more gameplay into each stage.
Capcom did not go into detail about exactly how those three areas will be divided, but said they will be packed with different surprises for players to discover. With both Mega Man and Proto Man available, those expanded stages can also be tackled using either character's different combat strengths.
Mega Man: Dual Override Custom Chips explained
Another major part of progression comes through Custom Chips, which can be equipped on both Mega Man and Proto Man to give them additional abilities.
There will be more than 50 Custom Chips in the game, covering both abilities that players actively trigger and passive effects that work in the background. The latest trailer showed Mega Man using two of them, Rapid Buster and Barrier, but Capcom is leaving plenty of room for players to experiment with different combinations and create their own builds.
Ikuta explained that players can "equip Mega Man and Proto Man with Custom Chips to activate various abilities", with the large pool of chips opening up different strategies depending on the stage and character. Custom Chips will not replace one of Mega Man's most recognisable progression systems, however.
Mega Man Special Weapons and Proto Man shield abilities
Defeating Robot Masters will still reward Mega Man with Special Weapons, continuing one of the series' defining mechanics. Capcom said it wants receiving a new Special Weapon to feel like a proper payoff after overcoming a Robot Master, but Proto Man will take a different path.
Rather than collecting those same weapons, Proto Man will unlock new abilities and additional shield-based actions. "I can't wait for fans to try out all the shield actions that we've implemented for Proto Man," Ikuta said.
That gives the two characters another meaningful split beyond their base combat styles. Mega Man will continue building an arsenal around the Robot Masters he defeats, while Proto Man will expand what he can physically do in combat instead.
Twinkle Girl boss fight in Mega Man: Dual Override
Twinkle Girl, the first Robot Master revealed for Mega Man: Dual Override, also made another appearance during the deep dive. Despite her “sweeter” design, both Ikuta and Minamitani admitted that she gave them plenty of trouble during playtests.
Ikuta said the team designed Twinkle Girl to capture "the satisfying essence of a classic Mega Man gameplay", with victory coming down to recognising her attack patterns and finding the rhythm of the fight. He added that once those patterns clicked, he was eventually able to take her down. Capcom is clearly expecting players to go through a similar process, encouraging them to keep trying when the game's obstacles start pushing back.
Mega Man: Dual Override Override system explained
The presentation also gave a closer look at the mechanic that lends the game the other half of its name: Override. Using Override powers up a character's abilities, with Ikuta describing it as a system designed to help players when they find themselves in a difficult situation and give them another way to keep pushing through a stage.
Activating Override also changes the character's appearance. Mega Man's powered-up state has already been shown, while the latest trailer included a brief glimpse of Proto Man using Override as well. Capcom stopped short of fully showing what Proto Man looks like in that state, with Ikuta teasing that players will have to see the complete transformation themselves.
Mega Man: Dual Override is set to launch in Spring 2027 for PC via Steam and Epic Games, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Players attending Tokyo Game Show will get an earlier chance to see how its two heroes and new systems come together, with Capcom confirming playable demo stations for attendees to try the game for themselves ahead of its release next year.
