Senua is a standalone sequel to Ninja Theory's Hellblade franchise, launches in 2027

Senua’s adventures will continue.

Xbox Game Studios and developer Ninja Theory have officially announced Senua, a continuation of the Hellblade franchise that once again stars the Celtic warrior Senua. The action-adventure game sees Senua fighting in a version of purgatory, and is set to launch on all platforms, including PlayStation 5.

Release date: 2027

Developer: Ninja Theory

Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC

What is Senua about?

Senua represents the third instalment in the Hellblade franchise, following Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II. This game does see developer Ninja Theory hit a soft reset button on the franchise’s gameplay, however, with Senua having a bigger focus on action-packed combat than before, and a new setting.

Here is the game’s description:

“Announcing Senua, a new action-adventure set in the Hellblade universe. Senua, a Celtic warrior, is trapped between life and death in a fractured vision of purgatory. She must fight to reach the afterlife and reunite with those she loved and lost, battling forces that threaten everything she believes in.”

Senua will be able to dual-wield new sets of weapons and unleash abilities to get through her battles in purgatory, while overcoming monsters borne of the mind. It’s unclear if the new game will bring back the first two games’ focus on Senua’s psychosis impacting her real-world surroundings, as of now.

Senua is also described as a standalone journey, allowing anyone to jump into the Hellblade franchise without playing the first two games.

Senua launches in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
