Roblox to launch Roblox Kids and Roblox Select in June, with stricter limits for users under 16

Children under 16 will soon access new versions of Roblox, featuring stricter limitations and improved parental controls.

Roblox is introducing two new age-based account types–Roblox Kids for ages 5 to 8, and Roblox Select for ages 9 to 15–designed to filter experiences and better safeguard children on the platform. These accounts will moderate accessible content and adjust communication settings according to the user's age group.

Using Roblox’s global age-verification technology or parental verification, Roblox will determine a user’s age group and automatically assign them to the appropriate account. Users aged 16 and above will continue to access the standard Roblox account.

What are Roblox Kids and Roblox Select?

The key differences between the three account types–Roblox, Roblox Kids, and Roblox Select–lie in their game libraries and communication restrictions.

Roblox Kids will be limited to games with a Minimal or Mild content maturity rating that have passed the platform’s rigorous review process. For this youngest age group (5 to 8), all communication is disabled by default, although parents can enable it through a verified account. A comprehensive suite of parental controls will also be available, allowing parents to filter games and manage other settings. Notably, the Roblox Kids interface will feature a bright dark-blue background, in contrast to the darker grey theme used in other accounts.

Roblox Select cautiously introduces more features with certain limitations remaining. Games available to users aged 9 to 15 may include those with a Moderate content maturity rating, all of which will undergo thorough review by the Roblox team. Chat functionality will be available, though introduced gradually with appropriate safeguards in place.

Users will automatically transition to the appropriate Roblox account upon turning 9 or 16. However, users who have not verified their age will remain restricted to the Roblox Kids experience, where only Minimal and Mild-rated games are accessible and communication features are disabled.

How Roblox evaluates content maturity ratings

The platform maintains strict content moderation, with additional safeguards for games accessible to users under 16.

In addition to its existing moderation systems, Roblox will subject all published games to “AI asset scanning, ongoing user report review, and multimodal moderation that evaluates scenes in real time for potential policy violations.”

For games made available to children under 16, Roblox will closely monitor the experience through a continuous review process, which includes developer verification, extended content evaluation, and more.

Improved parental controls on Roblox

This major update also expands the scope of parental controls. On top of managing communication settings for their children under 16, parents will be able to control content ratings, block specific games or users, and adjust screen time and spending limits.

Roblox continues its child safety campaign

This major shift in Roblox’s ecosystem signals the company’s commitment to creating a safer space for minors on the platform, building on earlier initiatives such as facial age verification to restrict communication and other safety features.

The platform has moved with urgency to strengthen its safeguards following repeated cases of child grooming, harassment, and other incidents on the platform in recent years, which have placed increasing pressure on regulators to impose stricter restrictions, or even ban Roblox entirely. As of today, Roblox is banned in more than 10 countries, including China, Russia, and Turkey, largely due to concerns over child safety.
