Is a NieR Automata sequel indeed on the way?
It has been nearly ten years since NieR: Automata was released back in February 2017, and now Square Enix has dropped a new video looking back at the game’s journey so far. Through the video, Square Enix and PlatinumGames have confirmed that NieR: Automata has officially sold over 10 million copies since its 2017 release.
But what's most intriguing is the how the video closed: “NieR: Automata to be continued…” hinting at future plans for the franchise. No further details have been provided, leaving the scope of what comes next open to interpretation.
NieR: Automata commemorative video's ending sparks speculation on new project
This can easily excite plenty of fans, especially with the potential of a sequel being one of the strongest speculations surfacing. However, according to a machine translation of the voiceover in the stream, the messaging shared during the broadcast makes a vague statement. Right before the stream ended, the voice over says, “the continuance of high-density experiences and area of interest expansion via complex deployment.” It sounds grand and suitably cryptic, and definitely YoRHa-esque, but it does not clearly confirm a new numbered entry or a continuation of 2B’s story.
Taken at face value, the phrasing could simply point to continued expansion of the NieR Automata brand. That might mean more collaborations, crossover appearances, live events, merchandise, or other projects connected to the world of NieR, rather than a full blown sequel.
However, it's also good to note that several key creatives behind NieR: Automata have reportedly worked together on an unannounced project in recent years (thanks GamesRadar+), which keeps the possibility of a new game alive.
For now, though, this latest video feels more like a celebration of how far the series has come, with just enough ambiguity to keep speculation ticking over.
