Double Fine has brought Brütal Legend 2 back into the conversation through its Amnesia Fortnight 2026 Kickstarter campaign, attaching a near-impossible US$100 million stretch goal to the long-requested sequel. The figure may sound like a joke, but Double Fine insists the promise itself is serious. If the campaign somehow reaches US$100 million, the newly-independent studio says it will put Brütal Legend 2 into production.

Double Fine says it will put Brütal Legend 2 into production if its Kickstarter reaches US$100 million, and even addresses the unlikely target directly in the campaign's FAQ. “Yeah. We're not kidding. If we manage to make it to 100M, we will put Brütal Legend 2 into production.”
That would require more than doubling Kickstarter's current record of around US$46 million, set by the eufyMake E1 UV printer campaign. The stretch goal is part of Amnesia Fortnight 2026, Double Fine's returning two-week game jam. This year, backers will choose four ideas from 26 pitches to be turned into prototypes, with one eventually developed further under the studio's new Double Fine Action Labs label.
Is Double Fine making Brütal Legend 2?
Not yet, since Double Fine has only committed to putting Brütal Legend 2 into production if the Kickstarter reaches US$100 million. Released in 2009, Brütal Legend is a heavy metal action game starring Jack Black as roadie Eddie Riggs, blending open-world exploration, combat, driving, and real-time strategy in a world inspired by metal music and album artwork.
The sequel itself, however, is not coming out of nowhere. According to Double Fine's 15th anniversary retrospective, Brütal Legend became one of the studio's best-selling games and remains the title that people ask about the most. The 2009 heavy metal action game has also maintained a PC modding community years after release.
Brütal Legend is also back fully under Double Fine's control after the studio regained its independence from Xbox as part of Microsoft's latest restructuring, taking its games and intellectual property with it. For now, Brütal Legend 2 remains only a possibility, but Double Fine is once again in control of where the series goes next.
