Forgotten Realms out, Ravenloft in.
Netflix has made a wave of changes to its Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) projects, according to Deadline. The streaming giant has cancelled the Forgotten Realms D&D live-action development nearly two years after it was first revealed.
However, the bittersweet news is followed by Netflix taking on a brand-new project from the same universe, this time adapting the darker Ravenloft lore and centring the story around its infamous antagonist, vampire Darklord Strahd von Zarovich.
What do we know about the D&D Ravenloft live-action series?
The new D&D Ravenloft project is reportedly set to focus on the origins of Count Strahd von Zarovich, the ruler of the gothic-horror Domain of Dread known as Barovia. It will explore his transformation from an antihero into a vampire Darklord. Fans can expect to see elements of tragic romance, surrounded by the gothic-horror aesthetics that define the Ravenloft setting.
The Ravenloft D&D live-action series already has some prominent names attached, spearheaded by screenwriter John August and produced by Academy Award-winning director Alfonso Cuarón in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment.
John August has worked on major films such as Charlie’s Angels in the early 2000s, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 2005, and Aladdin in 2019. Meanwhile, Alfonso Cuarón earned his accolades for Gravity in 2013 and Roma in 2018, while also notably directing Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Reports revealed that D&D Ravenloft will not be related to the scrapped Forgotten Realms project, which was in the hands of writer Drew Crevello, producer Shawn Levy and Dan Levine, backed by Hasbro Entertainment and 21 Laps Entertainment.
While it has a promising line-up, development of Forgotten Realms had seemed rocky for some time, with no major updates such as cast announcements to give fans much hope as they waited for more news. Unlike Ravenloft, The Forgotten Realms has a more common fantasy world that was often associated with famous game settings like in Baldur’s Gate.
The show’s unfortunate cancellation wasn’t entirely a surprise, however. The culturally influential tabletop game Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) has struggled to transition into the live-action market, particularly as a TV series, with no successful projects to date.
The franchise also saw recent projects cancelled while in development, with Paramount+ dropping its D&D series in 2024, and now Netflix also pulling the plug on The Forgotten Realms more than a year after its development was announced. Its only TV series to actually run was an animated show of the same name from the 1980s.
That said, Ravenloft might finally be the project to break the D&D TV show curse, though only time can tell.
