Rumours of an all-new The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt expansion resurface, might launch in 2026

Are players truly getting more of Geralt this year?

Speculation is building around a possible new paid expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, nearly ten years after the game’s original release. Reports from a Polish outlet and comments resurfacing from CD Projekt Red’s recent financial disclosures have prompted renewed discussion over whether fresh content could arrive in 2026.

The rumours stem from Polish games industry commentator Borys Nieśpielak, who previously claimed that Fool’s Theory, the studio currently working on the Witcher 1 remake, was also developing a new expansion for The Witcher 3.

Eurogamer reported that Nieśpielak reiterated the claim late last year, saying the information was verified and suggested that an announcement could be made around The Game Awards in December 2025. However, no such reveal happened.

The claim gained further traction after Polish financial analyst Mateusz Chrzanowski published a report in mid-December, following The Game Awards. According to a machine translation of the report, Chrzanowski expects a new paid Witcher 3 add-on to launch in May 2026.

The analyst projected sales of 11 million copies at a price point of US$30 and estimated a production budget of PLN 52 million, adding that the release could serve as the start of the marketing campaign for The Witcher 4, which he expects in late 2027.

CD Projekt Red financial call hints at unannounced Witcher-related content

Nieśpielak also shared an earnings call transcript that reportedly has hints that “he's been surprised to see people miss” about the said expansion.

In that earnings call, CD Projekt Red chief financial officer Piotr Nielubowicz noted that there is “a chance” that new content referenced in recent reports could be released in the coming year, potentially impacting the company’s financial results and helping meet internal incentive targets. While the statement did not mention The Witcher 3 directly, the timing has fueled speculation that it could relate to an unannounced project connected to the franchise.

Is it really possible for The Witcher 3 to have an expansion?

There are practical reasons to question whether a new Witcher 3 expansion is currently in development. CD Projekt Red has transitioned its future projects to Unreal Engine 5, with both The Witcher 4 and the Witcher 1 remake being built on the new technology. The Witcher 3 was developed using the studio’s proprietary Red Engine, which is no longer in active use.

Fool’s Theory has also been supporting development on The Witcher 4, with work on the Witcher 1 remake reportedly slowed as a result. Producing a large-scale expansion for The Witcher 3 would require significant resources at a time when CD Projekt Red’s focus is firmly on its next mainline entries.

Narratively, the idea also raises questions. Blood and Wine was positioned as Geralt’s final adventure, while CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Ciri will take the lead role in The Witcher 4. Revisiting Geralt’s story through another expansion could complicate that transition.

For now, the prospect of new Witcher 3 content in 2026 remains unconfirmed. While multiple reports point in the same direction, CD Projekt Red has yet to announce any new expansion, leaving the rumours unresolved.
