Sega to delist original Yakuza 0 as Director’s Cut launches on new platforms

Players on older consoles may need to act fast as Sega prepares to retire the original Yakuza 0.

Sega are preparing a major shake-up for one of their most recognisable RPGs, and it’s set to affect players across multiple generations.

A version of Yakuza 0 is arriving soon, but its launch comes with a twist that players will want to take note of.

Director’s Cut rollout removes last-gen access to Yakuza 0

Sega has confirmed that the original version of Yakuza 0 will be removed from sale on PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam on 8 December, coinciding with the arrival of the previously Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut on new platforms. Once the delisting takes effect, the Director’s Cut will become the only edition available to purchase.

The updated release was first revealed during the Nintendo Switch 2 showcase in April, where Sega and RGG Studio announced that Yakuza 0 would be making its Nintendo debut through a Director’s Cut featuring new additions such as multiplayer support, English voice acting, and additional cutscenes created for this version.

With the Director’s Cut now heading to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, availability on older hardware is set to change. The original Yakuza 0, which runs on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, will no longer be accessible for purchase once it is delisted, meaning players limited to last-gen systems will have no way to pick up the RPG digitally after 8 December. Saved data from the original release will also not transfer to the new edition.

Players who already own Yakuza 0 will have access to a paid upgrade path priced at US$14.99, compared to the full US$49.99 standalone cost of the Director’s Cut. Upgrade options have also been outlined for other entries in the series: Yakuza Kiwami will offer a US$1.99 upgrade, while Yakuza Kiwami 2 upgrades will be free.

Sega have taken similar steps before. Early Sonic titles were removed ahead of the launch of Sonic Origins, while Sonic Generations was delisted prior to Sonic X Shadow Generations. The original Generations remains available only through a Steam bundle.

Players who want the existing version of Yakuza 0 have a limited window to secure it, before it is removed from all major storefronts.
