Hogwarts Legacy is now the fastest-selling game in Europe that isn't FIFA

Hogwarts Legacy’s launch sales were bigger than every Call of Duty released since 2017.

Hogwarts Legacy has proven to be a massive success for Warner Bros. Games, having just become the fastest-selling game in Europe besides FIFA this week. The Wizarding World RPG has enjoyed a bigger launch than every single Call of Duty game released in the last six years, and has already beaten launch numbers for other hit single player games like Elden Ring and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Elden Ring recently announced that it had just broken 20 million lifetime sales worldwide, but Hogwarts Legacy might surpass that number very soon. The game has already become the fifth best-selling game of the past 12 months, with FIFA 23, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Grand Theft Auto 5 (yes, really), and Elden Ring topping it.

This data was provided by a Gamesindustry.biz report, which also noted that overall game sales in Europe were down by 10% - and Hogwarts Legacy managed to rise up the charts speedily despite that. The report also notes that games like The Last of Us Part 1 and The Last of Us Part 2 have seen a boost in sales in February, thanks to the hit HBO adaptation of the games currently airing.

It’s worth noting that Hogwarts Legacy still isn’t playable to owners of last-gen consoles, where the game still hasn’t been released - so these numbers are missing a few platforms’ worth of data. The game was delayed on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One until after its launch on PC and current-gen consoles, and then it was delayed again this week to May 5. This means old-gen console owners will have to wait two more months to play the game.

Hogwarts Legacy is still experiencing performance issues on PC, and will likely need some tweaking before it runs well on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, so these delays make sense. The game is also set to launch on the Nintendo Switch on July 25.
