After a gruelling weekend in Leipzig, FlipSid3 Tactics have come out on top to claim the majority share of a $100,000 Dreamhack prize purse.
The DreamHack Astro Open Leipzig 2017 began its third day of competition with FlipSid3 Tactics squaring off against LDLC. This was an easy series for FlipSid3 Tactics, who were coming off of two best of one victories against BIG and Vega Squadron in the group stages. FlipSid3 Tactics were able to win both matchups on Cache 16-8, and Nuke 16-10, to secure the victory, and a spot in the finals.
The other semi-final matchup saw local squad BIG go up against Heroic for the opportunity to compete against FlipSid3 Tactics in the finals. Heroic, who had taken their matches in group stages over their opponents with ease, were favoured in this matchup, but BIG seemingly had other plans. After three maps of intense back-and-forth play, BIG came out on top to claim the right to compete for the winner’s share of the illustrious prize purse.
FlipSid3 Tactics had already beaten BIG during the group stages of the tournament, and were expected to continue their reign of terror on the tournament as the two teams kicked off the final on Cache. FlipSid3 Tactics got off to an early 9-6 lead after the first Counter-Terrorist half, and then rolled on with their momentum into the second half to secure the 16-11 victory.
BIG’s window of opportunity began to close; after a demoralizing loss on their map pick, the German team hoped to regain a semblance of control on Train. FlipSid3 Tactics, however, came out swinging once again to win the first half 8-7 and assume dominance over BIG. The second half saw little improvement from BIG, and with the assistance of Denis “electronic” Sharipov’s dynamic play, FlipSid3 Tactics took the win over BIG 16-11 once again to crown themselves champions of the DreamHack Astro Open Leipzig 2017.
