No more panic reloading.
Counter-Strike 2 has received a major gameplay update, overhauling how reloading works and adding far greater risk to every reload decision.
As part of the Guns, Games, and Guides update, any remaining ammunition in a magazine is now discarded when reloading. Instead of “topping up” bullets, players will always replace the entire magazine using their reserve ammo–a system Valve believes to offer a more meaningful trade-off.
“We think the decision to reload should carry higher stakes,” the update notes state. “Now, when you reload, you’ll drop the used magazine and discard all remaining ammo. Rather than topping off your weapon, a fresh full magazine will always be taken from your reserves.”
This change means the common habit of reloading at every opportunity is now heavily punished, as players can deplete their ammunition far more quickly if they are careless.
The update also outlines how different weapons are affected. Most guns will now carry enough reserve ammo for around three full magazines, though some will have less to reward efficiency and precision. Others will have more, encouraging spamming bullets such as firing through smoke or walls.
Overall, this overhaul adds a new layer of depth to the game, impacting both casual and competitive play. Tracking enemy reloads will become an important strategic element, while actions such as spamming smokes, wall-banging, and pre-firing now carry greater risk.
User Thour on X calculated which guns were buffed and nerfed as a result of this update. The Galil AR, M4A4, PS50, CZ75-A, FAMAS, PP-Bizon, and R8 all received additional bullets. Meanwhile, the SSG-08, Dual Berettas, Five-SeveN, Glock-18, MP9, G3SG1, SCAR-20, Tec-9, MP5-SD, UMP-45, AWP, M4A1-S, MAG-7, Desert Eagle, and the MAC-10 are all negatively affected, with much fewer bullets than before.
He concluded that there were a total of 16 nerfed guns, with only seven turning out stronger after the update. 12 other guns–AK-47, AUG, P2000, M249, USP-S, SG 553, XM1014, Zeus x27, Sawed-Off, Negev, Nova, P90–remain unchanged.
Map guides and custom games update
Valve has also made it easier to access map guides during competitive matches, albeit with some limitations. Guides can now be used during the first five rounds of each half–just enough to provide quick reminders. Players can access official guides via the pause menu, while more specialised guides can be found by subscribing through the Steam Community Workshop.
Custom games have also been improved. Players can now join friends in a custom game directly from the Friends list. Additionally, you can host your own session by navigating to the Play menu, selecting the Workshop Maps tab, and enabling “Open Party” to allow friends to join.
