Jaedong breaks the Kong curse, wins NorthCon 2013

The EG Tyrant prevailed over Acer.Scarlett in six games to take the $10,000 of ASUS ROG NorthCon. This is Jaedong's first gold medal in his career, coming after a long streak of second place finishes.

Having been denied championship five times this year, for Jaedong NorthCon was the last chance to take a 2013 gold. Jaedong flew to Neumünster into a stacked competition consisting of Life, Innovation, MMA, San, StarDust as well as some of the finest names on the foreign world like Scarlett, Nerchio and the Moreno brothers.

On day one, Jaedong took first in his group, topping StarDust, Nerchio and HasuObs. The results of Group D (Scarlett first, Elfi second) paired him with the Finnish Protoss in the quarter finals where Jaedong came out with a decisive 3-1. His semi final was way tougher, though. Matched with legendary TvZ master Innovation, Jaedong had to fight from a 1-2 disadvantage before finally conquering the Acer poster boy 3-2 and moving on to the finals.

He was met there by Canadian Zerg queen Scarlett. The top foreigner in this tournament, Scarlett had beaten StarDust 3-1 and upset Life with a dominating 3-0 in the semis and had build a strong momentum coming into the grand finals. With both players knowledgable in the mirror match-up, fans were up for a show.

The series went map for map during the first four games as Scarlett did not allow Jaedong to keep a map-lead for too long. It was in set six on Yeonsu that Jaedong decided the tug-of-war in his favor and pinned a final 4-2 over the Canadian. His victory not only breaks his runner-up curse that started with DreamHack Summer and followed him through another DH Valencia, WCS America S2, WCS Season 2 and WCS Global Finals, but also makes for a total Korean domination in 2013.
