Gen.G overpower Hanwha Life Esports to stay unbeaten at LoL Worlds 2026 Swiss Stage

The LCK rivals met once again on the international stage, with plenty at stake in their second Swiss Stage matchup.

The second day of the 2026 League of Legends World Championship Swiss Stage brought another highly anticipated showdown, this time between two of the LCK's strongest teams, Gen.G and Hanwha Life Esports (HLE). Having already battled for the LCK championship earlier this year, the two South Korean powerhouses found themselves facing each other once again, this time on the international stage.

However, what could have been another closely contested battle between two of the tournament's heavy favourites turned into a one-sided affair, with Gen.G overwhelming HLE to secure their second consecutive victory at Worlds 2026.

HLE arrived at the tournament as the reigning 2026 Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) champions and the LCK's second seed, having established themselves as one of the strongest teams internationally. However, their domestic rivals Gen.G had the upper hand in their most recent encounter, defeating HLE 3-1 in the LCK Season grand final to secure the region's first seed at Worlds 2026.

Both teams also made strong starts to their Swiss Stage campaigns. Gen.G defeated the LPL's fourth seed, Shanghai Invictus Gaming, while HLE took down Top Esports in their respective opening matches, setting up a 1-0 showdown between two of the LCK's biggest contenders.

How did Gen.G defeat Hanwha Life Esports at Worlds 2026?

The match began with both teams looking for opportunities to disrupt the laning phase, with early skirmishes breaking out as Gen.G and HLE attempted to gain an advantage over each other. However, it was Gen.G who found greater success in their early engagements, gradually pulling ahead as the game progressed.

One of the biggest turning points came when HLE attempted to ambush midlaner Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon  in the jungle. Unfortunately for HLE, the play quickly backfired, with jungler Kim “Canyon” Geon-bu's Qiyana making all the difference.

Canyon's intervention allowed Gen.G to turn the engagement around, setting up kills for his teammates as the rest of the squad quickly followed through. What could have been an opportunity for HLE to shut down Chovy instead turned into a disastrous fight, allowing Gen.G to further strengthen their advantage.

Unwilling to let their opponents completely run away with the game, HLE continued to look for opportunities to fight back. Top laner Choi “Zeus” Woo-je and botlaner Lee “Gumayusi” Min-hyeong managed to find crucial picks in the mid lane, giving HLE some breathing room as they attempted to regain control.

However, every attempt to recover was met with an answer from Gen.G. As the game moved into the mid game, Gen.G continued to find favourable engagements and punish HLE's positioning across the map. Their relentless pressure made it increasingly difficult for HLE to contest objectives or find opportunities to turn the game around.

With Gen.G consistently coming out ahead in skirmishes and teamfights, their gold advantage eventually ballooned to 10,000, leaving HLE struggling to keep up. The growing difference in gold and items made HLE increasingly vulnerable, with Gen.G finding little resistance as they continued to push towards their opponents' base.

Despite HLE's efforts to defend, Gen.G maintained their dominance throughout the closing stages of the match. After 29 minutes, the LCK champions finally broke through HLE's defences and destroyed their Nexus, finishing with an overwhelming 22-7 kill lead and a staggering 16,000 gold advantage.

The victory puts Gen.G at 2-0 in the Swiss Stage, leaving the LCK's first seed just one match win away from securing their place in the Knockout Stage. Having already defeated two opponents in convincing fashion, Gen.G continue to strengthen their position as one of the favourites to claim the Summoner's Cup.

Meanwhile, HLE drop to 1-1 following their first defeat of the tournament. Although the reigning MSI champions still have plenty of opportunities to recover, they will need two more match victories to advance to the Knockout Stage.

With both teams still firmly in contention, the race for the eight Knockout Stage spots continues to heat up as Worlds 2026 moves into the next round of the Swiss Stage.
