It’s confirmed: New expansion announcement to be streamed on March 11. But what is it?

Is Yogg-Saron coming to Hearthstone?

The community is already speculating what the new card set will be about.

On March 8, pro players, media representatives and community influencers were gathered at the Blizzard campus for a “secret event”. Of course, it being secret meant no official information coming our way, but Hearthstone fans quickly put two and two together. With spring approaching and with it the arrival of standard, it could only mean one thing: A glimpse into the new expansion. On March 4, a teaser post on the official Hearthstone page became the second hint towards the new set, saying that March 11 will feature a stream about “what’s coming next to Hearthstone”.

Understandably, community members threw themselves looking for clues about the theme of the possible new expansion and they started with said official page. Noticing a change in the preview cards on the page and connecting a few more dots, popular Hearthstone content creator presented the theory that the Old Gods are coming to Blizzard’s card game.

Whether that’s true or not will be shown on March 11, but if that is indeed the case exciting times lie ahead. ?xtremely powerful, vile creatures, the Old Gods – also known as Elder Gods, or Old Whisperings, among other monikers – used to rule the universe before the titans’ council secluded them on Azeroth.

World of WarCraft players have already met a couple of the Old Gods. C’Thun, the Old God of Chaos and a horrible eye monster, served as the final boss in the Ahn’Qiraj raid. Similarly, Yogg-Saron – the Old God of Death and one of the more recognizable images in the WarCraft universe – was defeated in his prison in Ulduar. Y’Shaarj, killed by the Titans, and N’Zoth are yet to be fought in any Warcraft game and Hearthstone might just be their debut arena.
