After the recent conclusion of the various regional Winter Finals Preliminaries, Hearthstone will not be having a break this weekend. Wombo and Shu will be presenting Wombology #1 – a Hearthstone invitational event from February 27-28th.
The invited line-up is pretty exciting, featuring 16 of the world’s best Hearthstone players including the likes of Lifecoach, Firebat, Purple and many other heavyweights. Some first round matchups to look out for are Orange vs StrifeCro, Lifecoach vs Purple and EkOp vs Firebat. Besides watching professionals play, and picking up a few tips, I find viewing tournaments most exciting when players include fresh ideas in their deck-building, so I am hoping to see deck innovations as professional players prepare for competitive Standard format.
The tournament format will be Last Hero Standing with 1 ban, and will feature single elimination rounds of Bo5s. There is also a side event with lesser known players battling it out for a smaller prize pool. This aspect of the tournament is interesting and will give these players more media coverage and competitive experience. Considering that Wombo is one of the organisers, this side event is not surprising. This is the bracket:
The tournament winner takes home $3500, which is quite a sizable sum. Wombology #1 also has its own free fantasy league for viewers to stand a chance to win Wombo vouchers for correct win predictions – perhaps an added incentive to watch the tournament – because the PGL Tavern Tales is happening concurrently.
This weekend will prove to be an exciting one for Hearthstone, whichever tournament you watch.
